Double paned visors... do they exist?

My HJC helmet has a clear insert for the visor which creates a dual layered zone to drastically reduce fogging. There's a bead of silicone around the edges of the insert to create a pocket of air between the visor and the insert. Problem is, over time, the insert doesn't sit snug against the visor anymore and fogging is once again an issue.

So I was wondering why don't they just make visors that are dual paned to begin with like my snowboarding goggles? Does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes such a product? I did some googling and only came up with snowmobiling stuff.
 
i know this doesn't really answer your question but scorpion helmets all come with fog proof visors. They have a coating on them that will prevent any type of fogging. I've had scorpion helmets for 4 years and fogging was never an issue. Perhaps you can look into buying a scorpion for your next lid. It doesn't cost much more than a HJC and it's a better helmet overall.
 
You named it....a snowmobile helmet visor. Is the helmet DOT'd etc or just a helmet to hit the snow trails?
 
There are also lots of defogging sprays that you can buy. Snowmobile shops usually carry them as well as hockey/sports stores. Full face shields tend to fog up pretty bad during a game.

Yes they do exist. I have an HJC helmet too with a tinted visor. go to any retailer and they will be able to get a clear or a tinted one that are single paned with anti fog coating.
 
Yah... As stated, they are just snowmobile visors. Every Canadian Tire around me carries them.
 
The double ones are for snowmobiles and are not DOT approved but you can still use them all snowmobile helmets are DOT approved. If you really want want to prevent fogging get a electric one I would never use anything else for snowmobiling. If I rode a motorcycle in this weather i would be using an electric visor it is the only thing I have ever found that actually eliminates fogging.
 
Yup. Bell makes a snow one too. Ive got a non heated double wall and its worked fine.for riding down to minus 3. after that the edges begin to fog up and youd need electric

Thanks guys for all your responses. I wasn't sure about compatibility between street/snowmobile helmets so I'll look further into that. Any suggestions on brand/model to consider are welcome. No worries about DOT.

The electric visors intrigue me... did a brief google search and mostly got product pages that don't describe how it works. I assume they're basically double-panes with a heating element that warms up the air gap?

The pinlock system is the one I've got and, while it works initially, the insert eventually refuses to stay in place. I've considered permanently attaching the insert with silicone but I also dislike the way the insert disrupts my field of vision (it's not that bad I know ;) ). It just surprises me that there aren't many visors out there that are fully dual paned from edge to edge.

I haven't tried anti-fog coatings but based on my ski/snowboarding experience they don't seem to work for me. My body expels quite a lot of heat and moisture (think I'm borderline hyperhydrosis lol) and the only snow goggles that have worked for me are Smith dual-layered goggles (phenom and IO). Even these fog up at times.
 
Go to royal distributing they have the electric visors on the shelf and probably one to fit your hjc. They work the same as your rear defroster on your car there is a thin metallic coating on the inside that gets warm. Or just buy a cheap snowmobiling helmet that comes with one.

What you can do, instead of bothering with an electric visor, is get a normal double pained sled visor like suggested.
Buy a "no fog" mask also at royal. It fits over your face and forms a seal over your nose and it pushes all your breath out the bottom of the helmet. Added benefit is it covers your neck and face so you stay air tight and toasty.
I use one with an open face mx style helmet with goggles and even at -20 it didn't fog once.
 
Arai makes double visors. I have one for my RX-Q and it's DOT approved. It also have an extra large rubber seal which makes it completely waterproof.

I run with a Respro "Foggy" breath mask. I've used it in my shoei and suomy for years, and recently ordered one in from England as I couldn't find a retailer on line for them.

GP Bikes carries them now, right next to the cash.

I ended up buying a double pane for the HJC at the show as well as the breath guard/mask for $25 total. Worked great even without the mask! I now have a winter ready lid :). Also picked up a new helmet for the warmer months. Thanks again for the advice guys
 
Well, my Icon Airframe came with no-fogging clear visor, that worked good. I just changed it to smoked and never completely close the visor, so small amount of fog clears pretty fast.
The recent helmet, that I got as a present from my friends - Nolan N84. It's visor is fogging very badly, but there was an insert, that I installed and now it works perfect. I just don't like very much the helmet itself, but this is another story...
