Interesting.. all but one of the comments so far are completely opposed, but the poll is showing over 25% read them.

If that holds out of 10,000 that's 2,500 people who would see my add.. that's not bad.

And that's not taking in account the folks who just think it's cool to say they'd throw it out on the internetz but would actually take a look if a coupon or something caught their eye..

please note, i fired my realtor after he had the balls to leave hangers on my neighbors houses. he had been doing a good job, but i found it completely disrrespectful. he had put a lot of time into us, and he threatened to sue.
his primary competitor did a great job finding us a house.

on another note,
a lady around the corner from us is a yoga teacher, she keeps leaving flyers in our front step. i have been collecting newspapers, and have weekly been putting them on her porch. 2 of my neighbors have joined in.

don't think that people can be very difficult if you ignore their requests not to advertise, if they don't mind, then by all means. leave a hanger.

Luc, I can tell right now you'd be throwing your money away on the door knockers. No one picks their Realtor that way. You need to think bigger and cheaper. Talk to some taxi cab companies to see what the cost would be to get on the back window of a couple of vans. I know from personal experience the radio station I worked for did 3 cabs for some left over contra we had. We wrapped all the windows of 3 minivan cabs (not just the back). The cost to do so was about $1000 each and then a monthly cost to advertise on the cab was very minimal after that (I can't remember the exact amount we paid). We did need to sign a 2 year contract to stay on the cab. It's not as sexy as being on a bus, but it's an excellent alternative and we saw them everywhere.

You admit that he was doing a good job, but you fired him for advertising his services to your neighboors? Did you think you were his only client?

I can see if he had talked someone out of buying your home and into the neighboor's or something like that.. but firing him for trying to expand his business while still satisfying your needs is a YOU problem.. I see nothing wrong with what he did and would do it myself.

First.. $1000.00 per car for 3 window films is CRAZY! You were taken for a ride my friend.. I got my entire car done for $1000.. a couple of windows should be 300 -500 MAX.

More to the point though, I have considred the cab company route.. it's an option, I'm just not looking for anything with an ongoing monthly cost or a contract at the moment. I know the door hangers aren't everyones cup of tea.. and I FULLY expect a lot.. even most will just be tossed out. And people a fully within their right to do so.. depending on what it is, I often do it myself. But I also dont feel they agravated most people like a few posts above seem to indicate.. it`s not like i`m spaming your smartphone twice a day.. it`s a door hanger, if you like you read it.. if you dont you toss it.. no big deal. What I like about them is they are a one time cost, and pretty in expensive at that. About 500 dollars for 10k homes.. if even one new client comes out of the 10k delivered it would be worth my investment.

Anyway, I just wanted to see a ball park % of those would take a second or two to look these kinds of things over when they are found at the door, and it seems to be hovering around 20%..

When you paid in trade (contra/air time) you pay the full retail price. Had we spent cash money, the price would have been lower.

This gets me mad

Ah. Makes sense.

I probably wouldn't have fired the guy, but it would have ****** me off. You compare these things to spamming a smart phone? But really, on a phone it gets deleted, in a neighbourhood they fly around and create an eye sore.

I'm happy to recycle them, but I sure as heck would NEVER use the services on them. There's nothing more I hate than waste, and these things are pure waste. Sure they can be recycled, but that won't recoup the ink and time wasted going into them.

I think the results vs. comments are typical. The people who don't like will complain the loudest. But the silent majority who find it useful just don't care enough for the effort to write to support. Also, it does depend on the advertising and as someone said above, the secondary usefulness of the ad.

Fast food ones or other transactional businesses with coupons will get looked at and may get saved. Larger purchase businesses (real estate, swimming pools, etc) will be based on timing. But if that ad has a secondary nature, then it will get kept. We have realtor ones on our fridge with measurement conversion charts, temperature gauges. Guess who will probably get a call when we're selling the house next year?

For realtors, the one that worked when we sold the condo downtown was sales of homes in the area with the sale prices.

Good luck (one fellow business owner to another).

Thanks Major, an insightful post and I appreciate it.

You are absolutely right about the results, hence my attitude twoards them. As for fridge magnets and what not.. also agreed, and is something I have done and will do again, but it`s something that is more expensive to produce and really needs to be hand delivered.

On to the door hangers, also correct that for this business it will only be relevant to those who already have a the idea of buying or selling on their mind, that`s one of the main reasons I don`t expect 100% return, truthfully I`d be pretty happy with 2%. Also as you elluded the ad needs to have transactional value to be kept. Should I decide to go ahead mine will feature savings to the buyer or seller equalling somewhere around $500 dollars.

It`s certainly not like a fast food coupons.. the demographics their are much larger.. for this to work in my business it needs to almost be a perfect storm, IE someone who takes a second to read the ad, is already thinking about moving, and see`s value in my offer.. but like I said.. it would only take 1 of out the 10k delivered to make it worth my while..

On a side note: sending out the sale prices of homes unsolicited to the general public is actually against the law! So the realtor who was sending those around your condo may or may not still have a license!

Thanks for your post! :)

If it is in my mailbox I will look at it. If it looks professional I may even read it. If it is hanging off my doorknob it immediately gets torn off, crumpled into a ball and thrown into the blue box. The reason for this is that to retrieve my mail from the box I simply reach out of my door a little. To retrieve something hanging off my doorknob I have to open the door wider and reach around. It may sound petty but it is extremely annoying to me. If you want me to read something dont get me in a bad mood first !!

Gotta be one of my biggest pet peeves. All these things advertise is that nobody's home. THAT pisses me off! Nothing like going away for a couple days and announcing it to the world. Every day I get home, see a pile of flyers hanging off the handle and stuck into every crack around the door. I go into a fit of rage and end up beating the wife, kicking the dog and driving up on the sidewalk to KO random tricycles.

You don't want to be responsible for that do you?

Bingo! Our neighbourhood gets tons of crap paper and a few days away make it very obvious.

he had asked if i was ok with it. i said no. he did it anyway. he defied me.
he put a magnet of his on my fridge, he left another for my car
he borrowed a pen from me. he left his branded pen on the table. the one i lent him was nowhere to be seen.
i told him no bi-levels. he showed me 5 of them in one evening.

he was a prick

Ahhh so now the story is changing...

he had asked if i was ok with it. i said no. he did it anyway. he defied me. He shouldn't have done it after he asked and you said no, but he never should have asked permission in the first place.. his advertising is none of your business. (HIS advertising, i'm not talking about the advertising of your home)

he put a magnet of his on my fridge, he left another for my car Putting a magnet on your fridge pretty normal.. putting one on your car.. That's weird.

he borrowed a pen from me. he left his branded pen on the table. the one i lent him was nowhere to be seen. I leave my branded pen's all the time.. I don't steal pens from my clients homes though.. That's a little weird.

i told him no bi-levels. he showed me 5 of them in one evening. Now we are getting to the problem, earlier you said he was doing a good job.. showing you things you specifically said you didn't want to see doesn't sound like he was listening to your needs.. that's a much better reason to find a new agent..

he was a prick This coupled with wasting your time showing you homes you asked not to see and we have a winner.. you had a good reason to fire him, but it really had nothing to do with the fact that he had door hangers delivered around your neighborhood.

Well it had something to do with it. Another nail in the coffin. Another brick in the wall. Choose your metaphor.

the other played a small role, it was the hangers, after asking, and my saying, please don't, that did it for me. it showed he really didnt care about what i wanted, and his advertising was more important.

Ah; "straw that broke the camel's back." I just knew that there was a metaphor that applied
