Don't forget to file your taxes

Pro tip: for joint filers, CRA only provides rebate cheques to the filer who’s return is received first.

So, if you want the cheques coming to your account, file your return then wait a day to file your partners return.
It's all one pot here. I don't know how couples work the "my" money "her" money thing.
"I pay the mortgage and she buys the groceries" Well sure those two things are always the same cost?????

We keep separate accounts at separate banks. We both have access to both accounts. It's more for tracking and redundancy. She does a bunch of e-transfers out of her account and would notice if I did one. If we had a shared account, neither person would immediately identify it as suspicious as they would think the other did it. Thankfully we've never been locked out of a bank account but just in case it happens, I don't want all my money in one bank. It's still all family money but it is spread out.

Very few can do a joint account with lasting harmony. Most people are not skilled at managing personal finances so blending them makes things more complicated.

It was super easy for me. I'd hand over the money, all the bills were paid and she would tell me, honestly, whether there was enough for a another bike.

We’ve had separate accounts for decades , I don’t want to hide money, I just want that pile over there to be mine . Everyone does it differently and that’s ok

It’s surprising how many things this fixes, particularly if one partner has a money problem.

Separate accounts encapsulate problems and if one is bad with money, access to credit and cash naturally becomes restrictive.

If you have financial stress because one partner is spendy, try separate accounts or talk to your bank manager.

Check with a divorce attorney first to see if their path is cheaper.

Family finances should be different pockets in the same pair of pants.

Also, financial gurus tell you to diversify but are annoyed if you have diverse financial planners.
