Charity hit by thieves – twice!

Habitat for Humanity theft

Staff photo by Rob BeintemaEmpty tool cases. Thieves have not only robbed the Habitat for Humanity construction sites on Torbram, they're actually stealing from the disadvantaged families the housing is intended for. “This affects more than our bottom line,” says Thomas Fischer, Habitat for Humanity GTA regional vice-president. “It’s affecting the morale of our volunteers and families. They’re the victims.”
Habitat and its volunteers have been hard at work building 18 townhomes on Torbram Road south of Clark Boulevard, the organization’s largest build yet.
But a Thanksgiving weekend break-in that saw $25,000 worth of tools and generators stolen from the site, followed by the theft of a $35,000 skid steer (Bobcat) just last week, have left the organization grappling with both financial and emotional impacts.

“Each of these incidents has a material impact on our mission of building homes for hardworking low-income families,” said Ene Underwood, CEO of Habitat GTA. “Over $50,000 of stolen equipment is a huge loss for us.”
While the blow to morale may be temporary, the financial impact is not, and insurance doesn’t cover all the costs, which in the short-term could mean renting equipment to keep on schedule.
“For us to continue the way we were, we’re going to need community support,” Fischer said. “It’s hard to find another $50,000 to do what we need to do.”
It takes tools to build homes, and without them volunteers willing to work have nothing to work with.
Everything from cash donations, to in-kind donations of construction equipment and even security system support would help, he said.
Fischer pointed out that developers throughout the suburbs are regularly similarly victimized, but the toll taken on a charity can be deeper.
“We’re a charity that doesn’t have extra dollars to keep re-buying stolen materials and stolen tools. Our funds are supposed to go into building homes.”
Habitat relies on volunteers, including the families who will ultimately move in, as well as corporate sponsor donations of cash and tools.
“They are ultimately stealing home ownership from families through this act," he said. "The families we serve, they’re stealing from them."
Fischer said the thefts are “very discouraging” and just talking about it is “emotional” for everyone involved.
Those he has told express disbelief that anyone would steal from an organization doing good work, but he says the culprits had to have known what they were doing: Signage all over the site makes it clear it is a Habitat for Humanity project, including the signs on the fence the thieves drove over to get to the skid steer.
The thieves broke into containers the first time, so the charity, on advice from Peel police, bought secure vaults with quality locks, and took several other steps to beef up site security.
There is more to be done, but without direct help from someone in the industry willing to donate a security program, it can’t be done all at once, Fischer said.
“I would love to ask the community to come together to ensure (the thefts don’t) delay construction, or doesn’t delay the families moving into their homes,” Fischer said.
Move-in is to be in stages, starting in early summer 2015 and continuing through spring 2016.
To donate cash, equipment or expertise, visit www.habitatgta.ca, or call the Brampton office at 905-455-0883.
Peel Regional Police are investigating the thefts. The skid steer was stolen between the hours of 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24 and 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Anyone with information is urged to call police at 905-453-2121, ext. 2133.

Strange they don't have proper Insurance and they do have some seriously wealthy benefactors

I am sponsoring a family this hear in Hamilton. It was a random pick. This one's gift suggestions were gift cards to places like walmart and target. I figure because they have a wide assortment of assentials as well as toys and school items for the kids. Have a couple people pitching In as well. Until I read this, maybe if I collect enough I could do multiple families. Anyway food for thought. Pm me if something like this interests you. And goes to anyone on here .

Who cares why he does it? The awesome fact is he does it. He's been more than generous multiple times over for many people. Good for you sonny. It's nice to see people that can, helping out people that need it. Ho Ho Ho and all that good stuff to you and yours

I think he does it to reveal those on GTAM who are so jaded, bitter and cynical that they'd rather make fun of an offer of help rather than "risk" letting someone get help.
