Does anyone else defend other riders on the road?

Every time I see a car tailgating a motorcycle and I'm in my car, I always honk and flash my high beams at the driver and telling them to back off. Sometimes I even go beside them to tell them face to face. Sometimes if the biker gives me enough space, I quickly slide in and widen the gap between the car and the rider. I only do this on the highway not on surface roads. I know that this can disrupt the flow of traffic on the highway but I rather 2 cars hit each other going 120 in the same direction than a 2 tonne car barrel into a motorcycle or worse run over a downed rider after speed wobble or a huge bump.

Does anyone else do this? I get really defensive for other riders sometimes.

I do it in my car. Not so much on my bike only because I'm usually trying to watch all the traffic around for my own safety. When I ride in groups, of course I'm watching out for other riders in the group (IE: Changing lanes when possible so we all can get over or getting over first so the others in front can easily switch) but when it's someone I don't know, I don't want to seem like I'm trying to ride 'with them' if you know what I mean. Some people don't like that.

I have a decal on my back window that says "Watch for Motorcycles." I believe it's from State Farm. When I see a biker, especially when I can tell they're trying to change lanes, etc, I try to create space for them if possible. I do that a lot on the highway so they can move in front of me while I stay behind and sweep. :) It's definitely difficult sweeping in a car as opposed to a bike but I do what I can. lol

Ah, you are still awake,

I saw a guy on a bicycle getting cut off right in front of me today.

I was hard on the horn and the guy just got knocked a bit but did not crash because the car stopped pulling over just in time to NOT squeeze the bicycle guy in.

Fun times

Years ago I sold a bike and was riding it from Ajax to Mississauga on the 401 to drop it off to the buyer, my ride back was following me and I asked him to stay on my tail so no other cars would squeeze in and separate us. A fellow rider in his car thought I was being tailgated and proceeded to 'help' me. I was riding along merrily enjoying my last ride with the bike while the two cars behind me were cutting each other off and swearing at each other. Later that evening I logged onto this forum and the rider had posted about it. I found it all pretty funny...it might have even been one of you guys!! Things are not always what they seem, but on the 401 most drivers are a-holes when it comes to bikers. I don't go so far to defend other riders, but when I'm in my car I always give riders extra room, and help them by making it easier to merge, using hand signals so they know I see them, etc. this doesn't apply to the a-holes that treat the 401 like a race track doing over 200 kph weaving in and out of traffic recklessly....they can all go to hell..

Yes, I'm always awake. I swear I was a vampire in a past life or something..

I'm slowly forgetting what that thing called "sleep" is!

I agree, I only defend the riders who look like they wanna enjoy their ride peacefully. The ones going fast don't get tailgated anyways so once they are out of sight, nothing more I can do for them. I dont mind taking the heat from a dangerous driver if it means the rider can get on his way safely. I hope that eventually when that dangerous driver goes home, he will think to himself and call himself and *** for what he did.

I used to get behind bikers in my car whenever I'd see one just because so they don't have to worry about not having enough space. Then I realized that I don't want that responsibility 'cause I'd hate to be the guy that rear-ends a biker and I'm upping my chances by doing it.

I still do it from time to time when I notice a car won't **** off, but I don't go out of my way like I used to. Maybe I should?

This morning i saw a cruiser-type bike riding literally 2 feet behind the cube van in front of him on the 403. No way he could see what was going on in front of it. I wanted to go press his brakes for him.

Best movie scene ever. Oblivious rider dancing to some happy music while two cars in the back are causing traffic pile ups, explosions and airplanes to crash.

hahahahaha That made me laugh out loud. I can see it now. The rider is in la-la land with a big grin on his face, soft liberatingly happy music playing in the background while carnage unfolds..

You should have reached out of your window and tapped his front brake lol. I remember some moto race, guy in first place was getting caught by second on a turn so he grabbed the dudes elbow and stood his bike up lol and they other is swearing like no tomorrow.

I rather not have anyone do this for me (blocking my rear), as I am not comfortable with someone tailing me. If i know you and your in your car, give me acknowledgment and I'll follow you-with expectation that you'll give proper signal for turns, and slow down using brakes. Have a 1 km head start and call me if there is cops ahead (Bluetooth headset) :)

No absolutely not. Sure I keep my distance from riders when I drive my car, but I can't control other cagers. If the rider is uncomfortable he can usually just move.

I've noticed some ricer kids trying to race a bike when it's just trying to get away from them. It's happened to me, eventually I just go into the far right lane and go slightly slower than the slowest car. Kids are dumb these days.

So true

I don't feel the need to play mother hen on the road and potentially instigate road rage with other drivers. I leave some extra space when following riders and that's it. If I saw something really dangerous happening that might be a different story but, otherwise, I leave everyone to their own riding/driving.
