Does anyone buy Extended Warranty for new bikes? Did you ever need it?

Want to know if anyone buys the extended 4 year warranty on new bikes? When you went to use it were you covered?

I've got a 2011 Ninja, and I keep hearing about how good the motors are on these things. I'm real good at keeping up with regular maintenance intervals so want to know of others experience with break downs or warranty issues from Kawasaki bikes specifically the ZX6R.

How soon do you plan on selling it? For newish riders, etc - can add value when it is resell time. Let's say you ride it for 3 seasons, decide to sell - "still under warranty" will look good in your ad.

I know when I purchased my 250r , I had up to a year to decide if wanted to purchase the extended warranty. Kawasaki had a special on their web site for extended warranties. So I purchased 2 years additional warranty before my factory one year warranty expired. Kawi included roadside assistance with the warranty. So if you don't have something like CAA plus. It's an extra benefit. I ended making use of the warranty. Bike had a coolant leak at the waterpump. Warranty covered it , no issues.

I personally wouldn't. Major problems do happen but they are extremely rare with Japanese bikes. If it's ultra-terrible, like the frame cracking in a certain spot, you can usually get it fixed without a warranty anyway ... minor stuff, I can just fix myself still for probably less than the warranty would have cost. A lot of known problems with specific Japanese bikes still wouldn't manifest in the 2-3 years you would get anyway.

Probably the weirder your bike is, the more useful a warranty will be.

I have 2 years on my CBR250R (vs the standard 90 day) -- I probably wouldn't have paid for it, but it was part of the promo on 2011s during the winter (free with purchase).

The thing with this is, well it's two things really.
Number one is:
Anything that makes you sleep better, is a good thing.
I'm serious, LoL (and it is a recurring theme in life).
This sort of thing is very precious like the elusive Ma$tercard "things that money can't buy".
Well guess what - you can.
Number two is:
It's like a lottery, basically you're betting them that your bike breaks down; they're betting you it won't.
If your bike is a good one, you win.
In the unlikely event your bike (for whatever reason) is a bad one, you don't lose.
(Technically you "win" the extended warranty lottery.)
Anyway your experience is painless and worry-free, and that's what the manufacturers want.
Most of the plans are really comprehensive too, including roadside rescue, and they'll even bring you gas I think if you run out, heheh...
So if you've got money, buy it - you can't do better with your money; I mean if you've got money it should be working for you, right?
But I wouldn't, you know, borrow money to buy the extended warranty...

You have to view extended warrenty like insurance. You pay for something now to help you in case something happens down the road. They don't sell warrenties at a loss. Is it likely you'll have an issue? Maybe.

Will the cost of the repair(s) be off set by the cost you paid for the warrenty?

If you sell the bike and it still has warrenty, that may help with the selling price a bit.

I look at it this way, if you take all the money you'd spend on warrenties and saved it or invested it yourself, you'd be farther ahead.

But, if you don't keep any money aside for a raining day and would like some peace of mind, consider it as an option.

Also, not all warrenties are all that great. They may require paying a deductable of some sort and have service and maintence requirements that you have to get performed by an authorized dealer and have records to prove it. So, if they can void a claim some will.

So, ask questions, get informed and know what you are buying.

It's like insurance...you hope you never need it...but if you do it's there!

I picked up the bike today and they offered me the Kawi warranty with road side assistance. I decided not to get it and have up to 9 months to decide. Typically for large items I do buy warranty for peace of mind. However, in this case I may just opt out and just do all the necessary maintenance interval stuff earlier than expected to reduce the risk.

I get the feeling that there are many used Kawi's on the road with many kilometers on them and very few problems. The thousand dollars can cover alot of future mechanical hours.

Thanks for all your comments. Much appreciated.

Did you trade in you 250 for a ZX6R ?

I currently own both bikes at this time. My insurance will expire on the 250 next season and I may decide at that time to sell. For now I'm evaluating the 6R to see if I can use it for daily commuting and if I'm satisfied it's not just a weekend warrior hobby bike, then I will most likely sell the 250.

I'll see you guys next Wednesday if I'm not out of town on business again.

Cheers!

I did that, It was a great mistake. most manufacturers ( except Harley) only offer one-year warranty. the extended warranty offered by the dealer is outsourced from private companies how give you next to nothing. It's a big waist of money.
