Loud pipes will eventually save all motorcyclists. The millions of people annoyed by the loud crowd will eventually bring about legislation so draconian that motorcycling will cease as a viable activity. With motorcycles banned from roads the death rate will be zero.
Of course as some have suggested we could protest at Queen's Park with a noise display and some wheelies too. That will show the 98% that don't care about bikes why they should jump to our side. Sarcasm font

Yeah right. Come up with all the stories you want. Essentially that's what you are doing. Telling a scary story to scare the little kids away. Nothing like you predict will ever happen. Maybe there will be blitz's here and there, but no banning outright will EVER happpen. LOL
None of you silly and obviously angry people have come up with any reasonable argument that refutes the science behind how sound works in animals. Your annoyance with the sound and how upset you all are proves that you can't be neutral. Sound moves at 340.29 m / s. This applies to when you apply a horn as well. The sound alerts others to your presence. If you think loud pipes don't work as an alerting sound to notify your presence in the area, then use a scientific approach to explain how this sound ISN'T..?

Legislation will go against what we enjoy about motorcycling. Hooligan riding? Check. Speeding? Check. Performance and suspension mods? Check. Loud exhaust? Check. Legislation in the future will go against freedom of choice in motorcycle lifestyle will be odious because too many people are making the dooshy choice today. In their own way insurance companies are already leading the charge in this. That you can prove loud pipes saves lives means nothing.

I feel more confident on my bike with my akropovic exhaust. It may just be my perception but cagers seem to look around for the loud bike more frequently by either checking rearviews or actually turn their heads to look where is that bike with the louder pipes. If I was answering the question strictly on increased or decreased eye contact from cagers I would say yes, loud pipes make a difference! If they save lives or not isn't a question I am qualified to answer. Saving lives isn't up to the hi vis jacket, helmet or chromed out bike, or loud pipes - it always comes down to the cagers alertness, reaction time and their patience and attentiveness and driving skill.
Exactly. Jericho, it doesn't matter if you "think" or you can "prove" that a loud pipe will save your life. Technically, (Although not widely enforced), a ban already exists on "loud pipes" in California after market exhaust are prohibited, only OEM equipment is permitted. So don't fool yourself that an outright ban can't won't happen here in Ontario. It will only take pissing off the "right person" for them to go screaming to their friend Auntie Kathleen. The fiberals have proven again and again that there isn't something they won't tax or ban, (especially if it results in higher revenues). They just have yet to realize the windfall of revenue available from ticket revenues for every bike with a "loud pipe".

Anti-noise legislation notwithstanding, transportation policy consultants in G7 countries regularly call for banning motorcycles and scooters. The soaring costs of education and health care result in very expensive citizens. Foregoing taxes because of rider injury, disability or death only escapes government notice until another round of corporate tax loopholes makes that money important. More of an issue in Europe than here--it usually takes a few days commuting before I spot another rider in Canada's largest metropolitan area. Even during perfect weather, the bike:automobile ratio is low (high?). Annoying exhausts won't enter into the conversation, except in municipalities and they won't give a hoot about any internet arguments. Prominent citizens are very persistent in getting what they want and that doesn't include listening to the awesome product you want to share with everyone in earshot.

I don't doubt your logic. The majority rules, democracy and all that.. But proving this point does have relevance to motorcycle riders. It's a choice most make regardless of reason, but its still a choice. I don't think I have ever seen a bike without a modified exhaust, except mine last year when I bought it.
Yeah being noticed, creating awareness of presence is the entire point. My bike with stock exhaust is very silent (since I don't wring the hell out of it), so I changed it for something SLIGHTLY louder and noticed others know of my presence. I still took riders training courses, and ride defensively. Training is irreplaceable.
Totally agree with you. I don't expect all the people that pull wheelies on public roads are doing the image of bikers any favors.. same goes for other abuses and to see legislation pop up to deal with the riff raff isn't what I am concerned with or doubt. I'm just trying to see why people would argue against this principle of sound being used as a source of localization. That isn't refutable anymore so lets just all say "its gonna get banned".. that's fine. Its Canada.. say what you want, but this thread isn't a question of when all fun stuff will be banned. They ban all the fun guns too, but we still have some decent stuff that we can buy and have fun with..
Rich people get what they want. I get that. The science behind this principle won't go away because rich people don't like it. Biological facts vs political hysteria.. I know everyone hates anything super loud and what you guys are saying is possible/likely. I think that if legislation does get introduced it won't completely limit things, but reduce. I have no issues with deciding what is TOO loud, all the while not disrupting the moderates.
Problem with loud exhaust it's more behind the bike so likely not going to work like a horn, or save lives.
But luckily most bikes (that pass a valid safety cert) have a horn.
Nice thing about stock exhaust is the bike manufacturer already invested heavily in making it work for the bikes' engine and design.
