Last week I was riding north on Scarlett Road between St. Clair and Eglinton. It's a nice curvy section passing a golf course. At the bottom of a short hill, a cop walks into my lane and waves me to stop so I do. Officer is a young guy, probably a rookie. He was pleasant enough and shows me the number on his radar, 84 km/h in what I assume was a 50 zone. I thought to myself, "Crap, there goes my clean record". First, he actually thanks me for stopping and says many bikers don't. Give him all my papers. He goes to his car and to my surprise, gets out within a couple of minutes, not enough time to write a ticket. Then he tells me I'm free to go and the ticket would've been $400! This is not the first time a Metro cop has let me go, seems I get a ticket about half the time I'm pulled over by Metro. So what's the deal? What factors make a cop decide not to give a ticket? Is it age, attitude, driving record, cool bike?

Attitude is typically the biggest factor in whether you get a ticket that or your previous driving record. I had a hero cop a few weeks ago however I didn't allow that to effect my attitude. Eventually his changed as well after a few minutes of discussion and he ended up not giving me a ticket. He flat out told me that initially he was going to give me a ticket then thought I was trying to be a smart-*** which ****** him off more so for sure I was getting a ticket so he went back to his car and wrote a ticket. He said while writing the ticket he started to doubt his assumptions about me and then realized no I was just being pleasant so he ripped up the ticket (right in front of me). There are obviously two kinds of cops out there but if I get pulled over the last thing I do is be a ****** about it.

A buddy of mine is a Toronto cop..they apparently have video and audio now in their vehicles..which he hates because it really lowers his ability to give warnings. He pretty much has to give a ticket now. So the days of warnings might be disappearing..

I find it's Attitude relative to Age, Road Conditions and then Driving Record. I've yet to receive a ticket anywhere despite on occasion pushing it a little bit. In my car or on my bike.

Got pulled over for the first time on the 404 a couple weeks back, thought my clean record was going out the window, too. Cop had me dead to rights on speeding and riding without my insurance slip (thought it was in my wallet when it wasn't). I only got a warning.. I'm very thankful for that. He probably coulda nailed me to the wall

I think it is about attitude, I pulled over ASAP, shut my bike off, took off my helmet and gloves.. I didn't argue or offer any excuses (because I had none)

All in all, I was very lucky. My insurance renewal will definitely be less painful

I got dinged around the same spot as OP 2 weeks back. Radar showed 76km/h essentially 26 over, the cop reduced it to 10 over, no points and 40$.

Also does it matter if i have tickets on my G? Are they counted as one?

I got nailed for 42 over yesterday at the forks. Was polite with the officer, shut the bike off, took helmet off etc..... On top of the $317 ticket, he also gave me a $110 ticket for "excessive noise" Bastard

Yes, police talk about people who fail the 'attitude test.' Attitude, maturity, politeness, past record..... it all figures into the equation.

unfortunately, if it was a speed enforcement point with multiple officers; regardless of your clean driving record, politeness, etiquette, remorse... you're not walking away w/o a ticket

i talked to some Peel Police Officers and they told me it's more about whether they believe the driver will re-offend

I'll never forget the day the copper let me off after ripping through a stop sign and doing atleast a 100 kph or more in a residential area...
The reason I gave him for "flying" by was I was late getting to a group ride...I think my cool friendly demeanor and full leathers impressed him, it makes you seem more serious and responsible rather than a stupid squid.
He just checked my insurance slip and had me on my way. Told me to tell all my buddies to stop for the police...:lmao:

I was driving 68 in a 40 zone. Speed changed abruptly. I was also talking to my passenger. I was polite, but that didn't keep me from getting a fat ticket

It all depends on the cop, he can give you a ticket or warning.
Most cops hate this or that, or like this or that.
People are right about previous warnings, how major minor it is.

Now if Retro was doing 50km/h plus, you're no way getting a warning. :p

School zones are a no no to speed in everyone knows that one.

Was this your first time thru the forks? Do a search,Caledon noise bylaws.

On a saturday morning I was caught red-handed driving while talking on my cellphone, to my horror I had left my wallet with my insurance slip and licence at home (was driving my wife's car). Long story short he LET ME GO without giving me a ticket. It was a York Region cop in an SUV at Highway 7 and Leslie.

I'm guessing your booty shorts and low cut top were pleasing to the eye, Retro.

:p

Are you white?

Attitude is typically the biggest factor in whether you get a ticket that or your previous driving record.

I'm always polite and courteous to Police officers yet I get hit with additional frivolous tickets when I'm pulled over for doing 6 km/h over! I'm asian.
My WHITE friend gets pulled over on Eglinton for doing 20 or so over and when the cop told him he was speeding he just shrugged "meh, ok". Cop reduces ticket to 5 over, no points and something like $20 ticket or less.

Difference is his record is clean and mine's not. And he's white. ;)
