Do you fill up at gas station or jerry can?

Before i got into riding i noticed that whenever i was at gas stations in a cage i rarely saw bike riders filling up. I figured that maybe it's because riders like to fill up jerry cans and do it at home.

So now that i have a bike of my own, i'm wondering, what do you do? obviously if you are going on a long distance trip you are filling up at stations, but if you live in the city and ride around only casually do you ever just fill up a jerry can to keep at home to fill up?

That leads to my other question. If you fill up at stations and your gas cap is on top of your tank do you ever get splash over on your tank?, and if so how harmful is it to the paint/coating? I've only been riding a short time now and so far i've been too wussy to fill up at a station and just been keeping a 10 gal jerry can at home and doing it there but i guess i gotta learn to do it at the station sometime..

ok.. make fun now.. ;)

Lol.Bravo for having the guts to ask! Gas station 99% of the time.If you take it easy with the nozzle and learn where to squirt it in (sounds kinda...never mind) with the least amount of turbulence, you won't have much splashing. If it does, just give it a wipe with a paper towel.Gasoline might help peel the goofy warning stickers off of the tank tho.

lol gas station, I avoid getting gas on my bike....really...I use the station.

I find Shell stations fuel dispensers offer the best nossel modulation. You can ease up to avoid fuel splatter. I also grab some paper towel before starting to wipe away any drops. I haven't needed the paper towel but, I still do it because I believe when I don't, I'll splash.

Also, I've had people talk to me while I fuel up which can be distracting. Now, I focus on fueling, smile and nod and talk after I'm done. I've witnessed a fellow rider give his bike a fuel wash after looking up to acknowledge a stranger.

Gas station as well, each and every time. Be sure to close your helmet visor when filling up so you don't get too high off the fumes!

Gas station 99% of the time, 1% is when i run out of fuel and use a Jerry can :D

If you sit on your bike and spill gas all over your crotch, I'll make fun of you, and then email the story to the Darwin Awards.

100% of the time at a gas station.

I get off the bike, take my helmet off, fill it up and get a little stretch while I'm at it.

Just stick the Nozzle in (sounds kinda...), anyway, stick it in then use a tissue to cover the hole, that way the splash do not get out the tank.

Some gas station might not have tissue sometime and I just use my gloves to cover the hole.

Way to go Wingboy, turning this conversation x-rated

100% Gas station as well. I always get off the bike to fill and occasionally face my bike the wrong way which causes the bike to lean to the right side of the gas pump which makes it a bit hard/weird to fill up.

Gas station 100%

I haven't had to resort to the jerry can, yet (hopefully never). I have a manual petcock, so when I kick into the reserve, I'm looking for a gas station.

My guess is that the reason you don't bump into a lot of motorcycles at the pumps is because bikes are still not very common around here, and have fantastic gas mileage.

+1 on the paper towel.

Station 100% of times. Just look down the hole and ease up on the lever when u see fuel near the top. Keep the end of the nozzle way above the top metal part of the tank so the pump doesn't shut off automatically and splash all over the place.

Lastly, when done filling to the brim, turn the nozzle upside down when withdrawing the hose so you won't get any drips on your tank.

Gas station unless there is no other choice, ie, ran out of gas on the road. Besides, you're more likely to spill fuel on your tank with a jerry can pour than you will with a gas pump nozzle.

Also, have you ever looked inside a jerry can? The crud and insects that can accumulate over time in a carelessly stored jerry can or pouring spout will eventually find its way into your bike's fuel filter.

Also like RockerGuy's method of covering the hole. Will have to try that next fill up but I'm too lazy to walk over to the paper towel dispenser every time and don't want my gloves smelling like fuel... what if I put my foot over the hole and get a good stretch out of it? :laughing8:

Gas cap on top of the tank!!!??? - how quaint ;-)

Carrying all that weight way up high...how rustic. :D
