Do you carry original ownership with you?

I got a ticket for having a photocopy. I had only copied the front.
Apparently you are ok if you copy both sides.

I keep it in my wallet.

If a bike thief was to find a bike abandoned and all alone in your condo parking garage with the ownership attached, could they sign the paper for you and transfer it to themselves to find it a new home?

If you leave it with your bike you deserve it might as well leave the key and a light pointing out that the bike is free for the taking.

"True copy" of ownership and original insurance slip in a zip lock bag in my wallet.

I'm pretty sure if someone stole your bike and transferred it into their name they would be the dumbest criminals ever, the cops would find them pretty quick.
I always leave my ownership under the passenger seat because I have more than one jacket and too much stuff in my wallet

I have mine (originals) in a zip lock bag in a pocket, but over time these will take a beating. Id like to put photocopies in the storage but I think that we need originals on the road (at least ownership), right?

Im not going to keep the original ownership in the storage of the bike.

How do you guys deal with this?

I carry a "True copy" - ie. A scanned imaged printed in colour. A lot of people have thought it was the real thing ;-) A photocopy is good enough. Make sure to get both side.. you need to show validation stickers.

No, as soon as you report the bike stolen, it would be flagged, at the MTO, unless the person got to service ontario before you reported it stolen. Even if they had already transferred it, the Police would drive to the new address on the registration and arrest the thief. So they would never transfer it into their name. Either way, the cops would know who had possession of the bike. If not the thief then the "new owner" who would be charged with possession of stolen property. Your bike is recovered and the "new" owner would give up the seller in a heart beat as they now have no bike and have lost their money they paid for it.

But not at all smart to leave docs with vehicle. My ownerships, (two trailers, car, pickup, bike), along with pink slips are in my wallet behind my drivers licence. Never had them get beat up either. ATV stuff is in my ATV jacket pocket in a zip lock bag.

Use a photocopy, its perfectly legal and a lot easier in the event that someone wants to steal your ****!

hedo2002: Could you expand a bit more on why it is not smart beyond that of the possible scenario where it is transferred and sold for cash the same day with possibly fake or stolen identification?

I have kept both the ownership and insurance for my previous car in the car. My partner did not lock the door and the neighbourhood crackhead or whoever it was stole the slips. That is how I know it costs $10 for a replacement. So that is another possible scenario, avoid $10 and hassle and possible ticket for driving without proof of ownership.

Photocopies are completely acceptable, but make sure they are TRUE photocopies. Meaning, both front and back must be photocopied and presented. Each year, with a new validation sticker added to the back of your original ownership, you'll need to photocopy once more.

IMO, just carry the originals. Many insurance companies give you the little protective holder for the stuff too. Leave it secure in your bike's trunk.
