DIY: Visor Tinting (with vinyl)

Okay chaps, this here is how to tint your helmet visor with vinyl. (Sorry, no pics of the process, but have before and after. Maybe next time I do it, I will take pics)

What you need:
1. VINYL tint. NOT "window tint"
2. Hair dryer
3. Scissors/exacto knife

Process:
1. Cut off a piece of vinyl that will fit the size of your visor
2. Get a friend to hold the visor while you manipulate the vinyl
3. Start from the exact middle and work your way out
4. Vinyl sticks on with static and not glue so it comes off and back on again easy
5. Use hair dryer to mould and stretch the vinyl across the visor
6. Once finished, take exacto knife and cut off excess material
7. Enjoy

Notes:
- Going to Canadian tire and buying 'window tint' will not work. That **** is cheap plastic
- What you want is stretchy vinyl. I got 20% tinted vinyl. It says "tint" on the box, but make sure it's vinyl
- You can use water, but you will need to stretch the vinyl around the visor due to spherical bends
- I prefer using just a hair dryer and a dry application, if you **** up, you can take it off and start again
- It cost me $20 and covers two car windows or like 100 helmet visors, lol

looks good
let us know how it holds up in the elements
do you think it would be better to install to the inside?

Looks good - Thanks for sharing.

I would be worried about bubbles forming in direct sunlight for long periods of time though as it tends to happen to car windows when people tint their windows themselves.

Usually tinted visors (Shoei, Bell, Scorpion, Suomi, etc) are approx $40 anyways aren't they?

I actually think it's better on the outside, so that the vinyl gets dinged up and scratched rather than the actual visor. Then, when needed, remove vinyl and put a new piece on. Assuming it doesn't distort vision, this is a great idea for those that go through a lot of visors because of mileage.

I have a shoei rf 1100 and the mirrored tinted visors at best are $80. Regular smoked or light smoked are typically $50 ish. Nice work op. It turned out nice and that's a pretty inexpensive way to do it

HELL no, bro. My Suomy visors were $80 each from Sturgess, and that's their sale pricing. On my Vector 2 they're upwards of $100

I forgot that I usually get my visors during 50% off (ish) sales....

Same here... I just meant retail for those who don't. I know arai is even more for a visor.

Thats the reason I didnt say Arai :P

Another benefit is if you get stuck riding at night with a tinted visor. With this, just rip the tint off.

Looks pretty nice. If only someone could come up with a transition visor...

I got one at about $70 on sale and I've got to say... Its f'ing awesome... Never need to change my visor anymore. Only thing is that it confuses me when it gets dark outside because the visor transitions so smoothly that its never too bright or too dark through the visor.

why only Bell?? How come no one else has jumped on the wagon?

Probably just my luck.
Bell fits me better than anything else out there, but I can't put my glasses on while wearing one.
Hard to believe Arai hasn't offered one. We're crazy enough to pay >$100 for a tinted one - imagine what they could / would charge for a transition visor?

For questions you may have:

Where did I get it: Canadian Tire - $20
Is it good at speed: Yes, it stays on
How much are visors: $50 for Icon Airframe (what I have)
Why go this route: Save a few bucks, may be better at night where you can just rip off the tint and ride home with your visor on in safety. Or you can have the stock visor and tint it black like I did and buy another visor (like green or orange or whatever you want) and that way you have black and whatever colour you prefer.

Yeah, I'm not sure about bubbles, will have to wait and see. I know usually a crappy application and a cheap material will cause that, but hopefully this vinyl doesn't do it. When I had a car, I applied a black vinyl to my roof and it never bubbled or did anything weird; hopefully this material is the same

Yep yep, Vaughan Mills :) hehe
