Did the CB750 Customs eat cams too?

Looking at a 1982 CB750 Custom. I know the 900 Customs had a problem at one time where they would chew up cams. Was this ever a problem for the 750??
 
No - NONE of the twin cam motors had that reputation. The V-4 750s and 1100s (Interceptors, Sabres, Magnas) had the problem, along with rockers and cam chain tensioners. Bear in mind it's something that's nigh on 40+ years old, so age can be a very determining factor. If you're looking at a project bike fine, if you're looking at a daily driver let the buyer beware.

I'm actually looking at this as low budget touring option if my hips okay it. I will beware, but old Japanese doesn't scare me as much as the new electric nanny state everything. I like simple.
 
Did the 750 Custom also have the 10 speed gearbox?

It's a shim over bucket valve adjustment design - easy to check. The first things I'd do would be a valve adjustment and compression test. If you've got no squeeze it's a waste of time.

^this. cams do not have to be removed to replace valve shims. kinda nice, need? a special overpriced 2 piece tool kit,

but you can do it with tweezers and a small screwdriver. bonus is the manual cam chain tensioner - takes all of two minutes ..

Rattle can paint job, but otherwise looks fairly original right down to the Hondaline fairing, bags and top box. Very fair price, even if the motor's pooched which at 32,000 kms I doubt (unless it's been around once or twice).

I looked at it. A little rough up close. Had lots of gas and the motor was spinning over like crazy but wouldn't so much as cough.

Yup - 40 plus year old machines should never be considered daily drivers.

Spinning like crazy as in no compression? Or just decent crankover but no combustion?

The bags and fairing are likely worth that much if you parted it out.
Nope. Can’t give those away. I tried giving away a pristine Honda/Vetter set, with lowers, radio console, 10” touring headlight, big luggage rack, hard bags, beer box and trailer hitch.

Crickets.
