Designing & building your own home: possible to do on your own?

I do not know how difficult it is to do now a days but my dad and uncles designed my grandmothers house about 30 years ago, house is about 3800 sq ft.

My dad is a civil engineer, my 1 uncle is a metallurgical and my other uncle is a electrical engineer. together they built the house, my metallurgical engineering uncle (into mining) found a plot of land that was stable (he drilled core samples), my dad in conversation with my grandpa / grandma about what they wanted then worked up the plans and he stamped them got them approved thru building code (he also was worked for another town as an inspector). my electrical engineer uncle did all the electrical and hvac design work. they didn't do any of the handiwork themselves, only the design work, they handed it to a contractor to build it from the ground up... I think they said it only cost about 30-40k (back in those days) ...

Sadly 30-40k barely gets the permits and foundation in today, then you have the house to build......

Thanks a lot guys for the responses! All the info's awesome and very helpful!:bunny:

My plans are not for a few more years, so will start doing my research to see if building is the right fit for me. I may also consider some of the prefab homes made of recycled shipping containers (like below). They're not that cheap, but might be a more realistic option.

There's some great ideas for DIY housing at this YouTube channel, including this latest clip about a home made from shipping crates; http://youtu.be/5D4WHT2F0JA

Contrary to what the general public may think a GOOD designer, and a GOOD contractor will save you $$ when building your home.
you could design your own house and as long as it falls under part 9 of the OBC you don't need to be an architect, designer or engineer, but if you have never done this before you will be learning a lot from experience and learning costs $$ that could have been spent on a good designer and/or contractor.
