Defense against York U rapists

A friend has night classes on York's campus, and was asking me about pepper spray. I warned her it's illegal, but I understand her concern - for as long as I can remember York has been known for rapes and assaults at night among their poorly lit alleys and walkways. Supposedly construction there right now is making it worse (I haven't been there in a while, sounds legit to me). I don't have any good advice for her. What does GTAM suggest?
 
Google recipes for pepper spray and make your own.
 
If I was a girl I'd rather risk getting charged with having pepper spray than getting HIV from some drug addled rapist.

Best defense is to just be aware of your surroundings. Don't listen to headphones. Don't be on your smartphone.
 
Hopefully they dont corner you and you are a good runner

Pepper spray is ideal, if they get hurt from it that is just too bad, why attempt to commit a crime in the first place.

Wow I must be ignorant. Rapes are that common? I had no idea, seriously. I thought it was a very rare thing.
 
Always walk with someone else, never alone. Having worked at a university, I know that many offer this service: have security's number handy and call for escorts to and from her vehicle/building/wherever. Bottom line, and I can't stress this enough, don't be alone.

Probably not.

BTW: Bear spray is available here and packs a better punch.

Some people (like me for example) aren't effected by CS/CN/OC gasses enough to incapacitate them. Pepper spray, riot gas etc are ineffective against a fair percentage of people.

That...or find a hotter girl to walk with her so they get her instead.

But really I go to york and MOST cases it's not as serious as rape thankfully... there are some really sketchy people there at night who come from jane and finch area usually..but I find robberies to be alot more common there compared to sexual assaults

Well..the rapist doesn't lay the charges..the police do and the Crown decides whether to proceed. The rapist would actually be a witness. It's really up to the police and Crown as to whether she would be charged or not. I would choose something you can legally carry and use in self-defence.
