Rode down on my 05 sv650s great 4 days riding dragon and hwy 28 and also fontana dam.

Great seeing jim tom from moonshiners in robbinsville good laugh. Dont miss talking to Ken Wheeler a true racer.
Great shop with cheap rates.

sounds like an awesome trip! We'll be down there for this coming week, but we trailer down. I don't thing the CBR <------- in current form would be as fun to get down there. But once you get there :) Last year we also hit the 421 in Boone (a.k.a the "snake"). Its definitely worth checking out, with an awesome hole in the ground bbq lunch stop (honestly, one of the best I've ever had in NC) in Boone. Ironically we've discovered a linear correlation between grammatical errors on bbq place signs and quality of the food.

The road is longer which is nice with less traffic, but there are trucks and some very slow locals. Not as many roads around it, a few which are scenic, but more of a retirement community. Yes, we were stuck in a vintage rolls royce traffic jam. Cool cars, but top speed is about 10 mph and they have no intention of pulling over.

South 28 and the Charoholla tend to be group favourites.

Same for me, I did it once and that was enough. Now all other roads in the area were amazing, scenic while twisty and much more enjoyable in my opinion.

I'll be passing through on Wednesday of next week. I told Tim I would email him with an ETA and maybe we can meet up for a quick rip!
I'll be loaded down with touring bags though, so no speed records for me....lol
 
I was down last September.
I stayed in Cherokee NC the night before I did the Dragon. The last 15-20 miles on US 19 to get to Cherokee were as challenging as the Dragon itself.
I also did several of the other runs in the area.
 
As much as the Dragon itself is overly popular, I could ride it over and over, many times over at times when it's quiet. Weekday mornings and even mornings during the weekends can sometimes be good, especially if there is a threat of rain. Doing evening or night runs on it are interesting too. Late fall is really nice too when the temps drop and all the fair weather riders don't make it down. I guess when the photog's are not out it's generally a good time to be on it.

Don't think I'll make it down there this year, so you all have fun for me:)
 
Simple camp ground cheapest place bear den sleeps one was air conditioning 28 a night clean and cold loved it got home tonight after 950kms from Princeton west Virginia

I'd have to agree. Either in the morning, or at night, on weekdays. Otherwise we go somewhere else. Between the harley trains somehow managing to go 10 mph under a 30 mph speed limit, morons in their corvettes too wide for the road, or the guy in the RV that has no clue what a pull off is, we try to avoid the crowds.

just after 7 in the evening, after the police leave.
Just be sure you have enough gas to get back to where you're staying. The Cross Roads of Time is closed by then

Stayed at Cherokee too . Never again . A friend of mine told me the place was great in its hay day . But now that the casino is open they couldn't care less about tourists .
 
I pulled into Cherokee about 6 PM. Checked into the motel, had a shower and then went to get something to eat.
I didn't visit the Casino

Yep, I've ridden the Wytheville area a couple of times. Fantastic roads, very little traffic. Highly recommended.

Last trip to the dragon we stayed in Robinsville at griffin cabins...5 min from wheelers.....had a cottage in the mountains.... $400 us for the week... the booking after us bailed so the owner offered us the cottage for the next week ....FREE.....fantastic trip....super accomidations...
BTW...everyone eats at Lyne,s place in Robinsville. Right accross from the jail lol.
 
I ate at the mexican place great food. Simple campground is right in robbinsville just past stop light in town
