I had to adjust the valve clearances on one of my trials bikes this year, the symptom was that the bike became progressively harder to start, then eventually would not start at all. Have 2 of them so after swapping out almost every assembly on the bikes to test them the valve clearance adjustment apparently was the root problem. Adjustment was simple, compression test was the best indication of the problem :/ In hindsight I should have done the compression test first.

Worrying. From what I’ve read though even an OEM BMW warranty will allow the operator to do their own service items. What if you're on the road in the middle of a long trip and need to change your oil?

Sonic was on the north side of Eglinton between Brimley and Midland.They got bought out by Toronto Motorbike in 1982 I think.You’re right about the Yonge and Davisville location, I was there once or twice. The one thing I remember about Toronto Motorbike was that they sold brand new, non current bikes cheaper than dirt.I bought a 1982 Honda CR250 for $1250. I knew a guy that bought a 1982 RD350LC for $1600 and another friend bought a 1981 or 82 Kawasaki KZ1000J for $3300 plus tax of course.You couldn’t beat their prices but their service was not so good.I think the dealership your thinking of at VP and Eglinton was actually a Kawasaki dealer on Oconner. I think it was called Gran Prix Motorcycles, no relation to GP Bikes

I had a 3rd party warranty on a car. They thought they had me as it was an 11 year old car, no way I had the oil changes done, (the warranty was only a year, starting when the car was 10). They said if I could prove maintenance was done they would cover it, I said open the glove box ALL oil change receipts were in there. They then said I had gone over the 5,000 Km limit on one by 100 km... I said yes look the oil change was done in Fort Erie. I live n Oshawa. I was on a road trip and was in the US. Didn't want to change oil in US as they may deny coverage so I got it done as soon as I was back in Canada.

Rep said too bad. I escalated it to the level of a VP. I said really you want to take this to court and state you denied because I was 100 KM over on an oli change, and waited till I returned to Canada to have it done. He said he would get back to me. Called me 30 minutes later to say legal had reviewed and they would cover the repair, (which was a power steering issue), and had NOTHING to do with oil changes being done or not. It was a $3,500 claim, a seal had failed water got into power steering system and rusted it from inside out
 
These 3rd party warrantees are just insurance policy's.
Treat as such in that expect the underwriter to deny

I had a good experience with the VW extended warranty. A/C compressor broke, I took it to the dealer, said extended warranty, paid the $100 deductible and it was fixed. No problems at all. That being said, I lost significantly on the price of the package vs the covered repairs. It was purchased as an insurance policy against a five figure repair bill if HPFP failure occured (which happened reasonably often but didn't happen to me). I doubt I would buy another extended warranty in the future unless there was a specific reason (like the HPFP vulnerability).

I got mine as the KTM has a bunch of electronics on it that are not user serviceable.
 
A Bultaco dealer in T.O., and I remember a friends older brother coming home on a brand new black '72 Norton 750 with gold striping from a shop in Hamilton, it was porn on wheels.

This. They don't make money by giving it away. Their first knee jerk on any claim is denial.
