damn we need lane splitting

Filtering refers to a traffic jam which is standing still at a red light and the rider will slowly ride by everyone using the middle line to get right up to the traffic light. Splitting is when traffic is moving.

And what the heck are they gonna do about it in heavy traffic besides demonstrating a whole lot of futility?

I'm sure if they thought I was endangering anyone they'd call it in.

You were doing good until this post. :D Yes splitting and filtering in Cali works very well.... and filtering should be allowed here.

hahah bit of a hooligan inside i guess :P

Close. The California law allows for lane sharing, lane splitting is illegal. Filtering is as you say, riding between vehicles when traffic is stopped.

Lane sharing is riding a motorcycle in the same lane as another vehicle. You share the lane with them (while passing). Lane splitting is riding between 2 lanes of traffic on the lines; you are not safely in a lane or sharing a lane with another vehicle.

As I said, lane splitting is illegal, lane sharing and filtering are legal.

I filter every day going to and from work downtown, saves me a huge amount of time, though I dread the day that I get caught.

Thanks for clarifying dude. Us Canadians aren't as lucky as you in Cali. I really think that lane filtering should be legal. Makes no sense not to allow us to do it. Especially when there is really bad traffic. Then again, I could see a cager getting really angry and trying to block you. Many people don't realize this but the traffic in the GTA is worse than many U.S. cities.

I don't know about you guys but I've been really courteous when I lane split and drivers seem to be okay with it. Any time I can't split and have to go into a lane, I always thank the guy behind me. I haven't been cut off splitting since last year. I think that downtown, they're sort of used to it. I'm at the front and gone before they even start moving, so I'm really not taking their spot in line, or anything.

But I still don't split until traffic bunches up and isn't flowing consistently or unless I'm running late for something. It's so much fun on my 250 - the thing swerves like a dream :D. I can only imagine how much more fun it'd be on a 125...

+1...it'd be great to have it legalized, but very hard to implement. I always look around for bikers or cop cars before I start, though.

Isn't the gta considered the worst in north America now beating new York and la for longest avg commutes?

Saw a big arse cruiser lane split the other day. I am still tryin to understand how he fit between those cars :(

I think the better term to use would be traffic filtering.

I filter once in a while, too, when it's clear and safe. Just use uncommon sense.

A problem with the GTA is that people are hostile mutha****as and think if you're getting ahead of them it's their responsibility to battle you, like the crab-bucket effect. Combine that with crappy foreign driving skills, and a lot of reform needs to happen before it's really accepted here.

A solution would be for the MOT to include more information about motorcycles in their training doctrine of drivers, and of course, to increase minimum testing requirements and to test decision-making skills. What's there is APPALLINGLY LOW AND INEXCUSABLY USELESS. Alas, governmental reform is best done at swordpoint, as the bureaucraptic channels are equally frustrating.

i filter sometimes too, but some cager turds like to honk and block me from weaving through lanes.

So many riders 'crash' their bikes lately on their own....no need to add constrained manoeuvering room to the mix.

Today, riders need to learn how to ride, period.

in Cali it works great ... they see you coming and they move over just a tad ... the only turds who don't do it ? are those with out of state plates... other then that they all did it over there ... at one point I remember following a gixxer on my buddies bike and i looked down we were doing almost 60mph ~ 100kph splitting while traffic was doing about 1/2 that or less ... i slowed down tho, felt like I was going too fast but you can safely do it 10-15mph over whatever traffic is doing ...

What do the locals call out of state bikers that don't know how to split? Any of them catch up to you and let you know?

I think the general domestic driving skills are pretty crappy actually.
