Cruising Australia to New Zealand

I've been to Australia; did a few road trips in a hire car for a few days to get the hang of driving on the other side of the road before picking up a motorcycle for the rest of the trip.

Sydney feels like Vancouver.

I stayed in Katoomba for a few days to do some exploring around the Blue Mountains.

There are lots of scenic spots down the east coast.

Kosciuszko National Park is good. The area around Omeo has some gnarly back roads.

The Great Ocean Road is really good. Did the length of it; too bad it was raining but oh well.

Phillip Island has the Grand Prix track (that was the purpose of my trip) but also has a cool wildlife preserve. Feed the kangaroos! (And emus). Cowes is a really cool town. And you can see the Penguin Parade.

Haven't been to NZ. Bucket list.

Why ever would you do such a cruise. Boring open ocean.
By all means do a cruise around New Zealand with lots of stops.

Australia too big for cruising. You need 3 weeks minimum for Australia hot spots and that's by plane. It's nearly the size of the continental US with lots of empty red desert in the middle.

Why would you care what they chose to do with their time and money? Taking the piss out of someone's planning and excitement is not cool especially something that would cost as dearly as this would. There's an expression where I come from and I will clean it up because it is extremely crude but direct - you don't use my wee wee to screw so don't tell me how to use it.

@ToSlow, the cruise sounds epic to me. Lots of pictures and let us live vicariously.

We are planning on flying in early and do a few days before we jump on the cruise ship.

Friends have done the Aus / NZ cruise I’ve sailed NZ , but on a private boat . Friends used the cruise ship company for a lot of exploring before they got on the boat , they loved the wine district tours and took a small boat tour of Sydney harbour . They raved about NZ and the scenery. I’ve sailed the North Island in NZ , in my mind it’s one of the most amazing places I’ve seen , I thought the north Island was infinitely more interesting than the South Island .
I like the open ocean , I’ve spent weeks at a time , I can stare at the horizon with a beer in my hands for hours . And have lol .

Growing up in NS i was 5min walk from the worlds highest tides. the salt water is in my veins

I had an amazing dinner in Fundy , I’m not sure if it was circumstances or the meal itself , but it ranks in my top few fish dinners .

Cruising on bikes and boats.

Sometimes the means of travel can get you into places not accessible otherwise. A boat can get you to an island with no airport. A bike can get you up a forest trail to a pristine lake.

But sometimes you just like the means of travel, even if it's inefficient. The most efficient way for me to get to Niagara Falls is an hour and a half
by car. Given the choice, I'd rather arrive, somewhat inefficiently, in four hours by motorcycle.

Where does the ship actually stop along the way. Most of the nicest tourist spots/towns don't have ports big enough for cruise ships. If it only stops in the Majors you wont get much of a feel for the country.

They are using tenders in some smaller ports , ship anchors and you get floated ashore . You’ll see the high lights . It’s not unlike having people visit Canada and announce they want to see Niagara Falls , the Rockies and maybe a Newfoundland fishing village and they are here for a week . You’ll see some highlights and if you like it enough you can go back and do a bigger land tour . Cruise ships are great for this , they will give you a taste of the place .

Certainly you are going to visit the Shire, Hobbiton the movie set from LOTR, you are a fan right?

I spent a month on the North Island New Zealand.
My partner at the time was originally from there and we had free home base accommodations
and a use of a car.
I enjoyed the "barbie" in the back yard Christmas Day.
We spent most of the time driving all the roads but wishing I had a motorcycle.
Tried to get to the South Island but the ferry is booked solid at that time of year.
I am not "city folk" so enjoyed the country and the people.
Found some fabulous beaches with nobody on them.
That bit of water (2,200 km) between Australia and New Zealand can get nasty
