Rant start: ...After realigning my forks, the torque wrench i bought (Mastercraft) from crappytire malfuctioned and didnt CLICK when i was tightening the giant bolt that holds the triple tree together. I realized it wasnt working as it should because it clicks a couple of times if you are over tightening it (It keeps clicking once past your torque settings when i used the smaller wrench on another bolt). I redid the the torque settings in increments and it clicked..but it was tooooo late..Went out for a test ride and went over a bump and heard BANGGGG and successive BANGS after every bump. I took it to Rob's place in streetsville and delivered the sad news that my bearings blew and would cost 400$...

The worst part was crappytire wouldnt give me a refund..like WTF?!? I want my bloody ****en money back. The mechanic came and told me it was working. Well if it worked it wouldn't have shattered my bearings (dumbass mechanic)..This arguement wouldnt have taken place if it worked...

Rant end..

Is there anything they I can do to get them pay for my repair or am i **** out of luck..

You can try contacting CT head office, they *might* give you something but I highly doubt it. Did you buy the cheap torque wrench or the Maximum version? Torque wrenches do not always audibly click, either - sometimes you just have to watch for the slight amount of "give" once you hit the torque setting.

Yup, I gave up on the Mastercraft torque wrenches after 2 of them failed with only occasional use. Switched to the digital torque adapter, no more overtorquing.

Canadian Tire is usually very good with returns...if you have a receipt its usually hassle free, no questions asked. If anything take it to a different location. As for them paying for your repairs...tough luck.

Yah its the mastercraft wrench..I bought it right before i started taking apart the front end and within an hour this happened. I had the receipt and everything and it was on the same day within a few hours...like the whole management was there. IT was stupid

What bolt were you tightening?

Was it the nut under the top clamp that adjusts the load on the bearings or was it the nut on top of the top clamp? Are your bearings loose ball, caged ball or taper roller bearings?

I am on my 6th one in 2 years. Almost stripped my oil plug when i relaised it didnt" click" I would love a full refund it isd the lifetime warranty one but have zero faith in the wrench now and use my old dial one ... at least it works grrrrr To the op let me know if thwey give u a full refund as that is the course of action i will take as well.

400 to replace the bearings? i'd be more ****** about that then a failed torque wrench...

Note to self: Never buy anything Mastercraft

I have no idea why you people insist on using the click style wrenches, when the old school dial type NEVER
have this "it didnt click" issue. Dial style lets you see activity as you approach the torque you want.

Actually my torque wrench is a piece of crap as well, been meaning to get something quality... anybody can recommend something good? digital or dial?

Same here, went through 2 myself and feared getting another. I had bought a $20. Torque wrench from princess auto 2 years ago and always does the job. I recently however used the slick snap on what a wrench.

I'd take it up with their head office. Remember though if you left the tension on when you store it then it will fail.

That's what I have, also. Not fancy, but there's very little to go wrong with those ...

It is not so much a click as a give on these things, particularly on lower range torque settings. I have heard good and bad about the other ones as well. I'm looking at a digital for work, that records settings, but then I'm talking $700 for it. This is a different category of tool!

A step up from Mastercraft would be Grey ($300 for a 3/8" drive, that does what a Maximum 1/2" drive will do) or Westward tools (available through Acklands-Granger).

Go into crappy tire pick up the exact same wrench you bought off the shelves in the box. Take it to the customer service desk with your old receipt and tell them you want a refund.

I don't think he was questioning the cost of the repair, as much as the fact that now he has to shell out 400 bucks for something he feels shouldn't have happened.
