COVID and the housing market

I'm with you, a watch is no longer a simple utility timekeeping tool, it's mostly a fashion accessory or wearable tech.
As a wearable fashion accessory, I explicitly do not want a $500 watch that is pretending to be a $100k watch. Actually do your own design and present a good backstory and I may be interested in the watch.

I feel naked without a watch on. I'm often without a phone for long periods , days (weeks) actually , and a watch tells me the time . I don't stare at a computer all the time.
Sure a timex marlin will possibly keep better time than a rolex, probably not. But a Marlin is $129.00 and I can trade a submariner for a plane ticket home from anywhere on earth, business class.
My kid will sell my watches and buy a Tesla.
To a degree its fashion, but even my good watches are tools , they tell time, I like the disconnect when I dont want to be online , or even available .

My wife uses that same argument for purses. I kinda like Kate Spade, her preference is Louis Vuitton.

Somewhere in my dad's collection is a brand new Rolex that he confiscated from the wrist of one of his salesmen 30 years ago. I should probably dig thru the bins to find it before mom chucks them out.

Mines not an argument, watch on and small pocket knife . It’s how I dress , so much so that I often buy a disposable pocket knife where ever I show up because you cant get anything through airport security and unless it’s more than a week I don’t check bags . If I check a bag there will be a pocket knife and spare watch .
I may need professional help.

You should go look for a leftover Rolex , depending on what it is , they have all quadrupled in the last decades , even a basic 50’s oyster in as you say mint shape is a couple grand . Buy a new used motorbike .

I've started being interested in pocket knives recently actually. It's really stupid but I had a dream that a dog attacked one of my kids and I didn't have anything on me.

Found a nice little knife at CT as a starter ... https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/gerber-ripstop-ii-fine-edge-folding-knife-3750210p.html#srp

Was down to $10 or so a few weeks ago so I snapped it up. Tried to get 2 as their stock showed 5...but couldn't find the other 4.

Apparently if I use it for self-defense it's illegal...but if I carry the same knife to open a package / use as a tool ... it's all good.

@mimicopolak , as per my cop friend if you use a bic pen as a defence tool it’s now a weapon.

@danp , there are “ non “ Rolex watchmakers that can service the watch for less , but at a point depending on which Rolex you own , it’s a cost and you want a service guy that can make a water tight watch that way again, and guarantee it. And Rolex , ( all the big guys actually) have started limiting who has access to parts .
No big deal if your older Tudor has an Omega internal , or an ETA or Valjeax movement. But the cool thing now is in house produced movement, so Rolex only gives parts to Rolex certified guys

Best pocket knife I've ever held is a Benchmade Griptilian. Liked it so much I bought two.

I did just order a Spyderco Endura 4 to add to the collection, which should be here next week. I love the look of a Spyderco

You've also got the added complication of factory repair restoring the watch to as-new condition. F that. Only do what I tell you. Do not replace any parts for aesthetic reasons (even if you send me back the old ones).

As for need for service, obviously it's a complex and precise mechanical object but some of the crap they lay out seems ridiculous. I can't remember which brand it was, but one used something like 10 different types of lubricant to service a watch. That seems excessive. I'm not sure whether that was obstructionist/elitism, lazy design or just sticking with what worked/what was current when each portion of the mechanism last got a redesign. With modern lubricants, they should be able to cut that down to one or two types and they should be less likely to degrade over time.

Yup, that's what I read also. You're basically only allowed to defend yourself in Canada with your fists / body. Anything else becomes a weapon and now you're a criminal.

Mind you...if a dog attacks my kids / family...I'll take the charge for the weapon to help them get out of it. I should probably actually carry it with me. It's currently useless.

I think I was told they really only use two lubes now , one one stems and such and another on gears and that levery thing I can never remember the name of. I’m on a rotation so I don’t have a few needing service at the same time. It’s is the cost of ownership.

I really like a wenger swiss for every day . Very slim , big blade to open Amazon boxes , small blade clean fingernails .
Bench made and spyderco are both an excellent product . US exchange made them spendy. All summer I have a Camilus vintage w/ marlin spike in my pocket . My brother always Carries a spyderco sharp finger, one blade , opens cartons .

I'm still not convinced about a small knife as a defensive weapon against a dog. A few pokes don't hurt enough to change your attitude and the odds of you hitting something fight stopping are low. I figure I have a better chance without the knife (it takes some time to get the knife into the fight, without sufficient training, odds are high you cut yourself, etc). One arm into the dogs mouth to give it something to chew on, the other one does what's required to stop the fight (unfortunately for the dog, probably its eyes). I've been attacked a few times by german shepherds. It sucks. Protect your neck, ignore the pain, win.

If you carry a bigger knife (eg blade 6" or so long) you have a better chance of inflicting damage but that's pretty big for edc.

The strap broke on my cheap Timex during lock down and I got used to looking at the phone. Being mostly retired time is not that important. The phone works better if I have an appointment. Set an alarm. The car has a clock as well as does just about every appliance in the house.

My wife has a knife fetish. Her favorite is a Gerber that she uses to gut peop... er, fish...

She uses it to gut fish.

I love my Zero Tolerance folders...

..is this thread suppose to be about house market what never goes down because all the laws of economy are different now?...

it was much more entertaining to see all those crazy listings examples and talks about foreign students owning all the houses here, get back on track please! haha

My old house is for sale. 1100 sq ft in the suburbs. They want 400 more than they bought it for in 2018. House sigma predicts 600 more. We'll see. That seems optimistic.

I have a nice Kershaw I usually have on me.
My dad bought me a new Kershaw 30yrs ago I lost somewhere. Would love to have that knife back. Rubberized handle and have never had a knife stay as sharp as that one.
Fun fact, Kershaw or another of the big knife companies around 1990 made a knife designed by my father. A farmer, he called the company asking for a replacement part for one of his knives as he had broken off the tip while trying to use it as a screwdriver and explained to them as a farmer it would be helpful to have a flat tip on the end for farm use (instead of needing a utility type knife). They thought it was a great idea and sent him some prototypes to choose and critique and they built the one he suggested.

The blunt tip is great for farmers , and the style sheeps foot/ drop point is in the standard Barlow knife , like an electricians knife. You mostly need to cut stuff , stabbing doesnt happen often.

I laughed out loud about the farmer / prying. They wouldnt walk 100ft and get an opener. Chisel, screwdriver, pocket knife, lid goes back on with a hammer or a rock. One side of my family are those guys.
