Could Buell be making a comeback w/20K streetbike?

The Buell 1190 with the Rotax engine was on the right track, before the BUELL went belly up. It would be interesting to see what kind of new street bike they can get on the road for sale.

Buell never went belly up. Harley dropped the Buell line and cut ties, no longer supplying engines. Buell went independent.

close, not quite right.
Buell was shuttered by HD as part of their restructuring agreement with the U.S. Gov't after receiving a great big bail out package kind of like GM.

Buell's next bike that was in preproduction was the Barracuda II. The 10 or so that were completed were crushed or thrown in the dumpsters (seriously).

EBR (Erik Buell Racing) was created very shortly after HD shut down Buell, and supplied race parts, and race bikes only (non-compete clause with HD) for a year. After the year (and a few months) was up, they released the 1190rs in limited numbers to generate capital for their race program, and to get some sellable bikes out there.

HD supplied motors for the XB Platform only - the 1125 platform uses Rotax engines. HD Had to pay Rotax a multi-million dollar penalty for breaking their contract to produce the 1125 motors.

EBR uses the 1125 motors as a base for the 1190's, as mentioned in an earlier post in this thread.

And apparently HD still owns the Buell name, which is why EBR now exists.

Barracuda 2

Note the cover...
Literally... the Barracudas went to the crusher. Incomplete ones tossed in the dumpster... that had to hurt the people who built them...

Atleast one should have been kept and sent to barbers museum.

You try explaining that to the retards at HD head office.
They had an offer from Bombardier to buy Buell - just the 1125 platform, nothing with HD motors. Offer was close to 100 million IIRC.
Now remember, Bombardier owns Rotax, who HD had to pay about 20 million to in order to break their contract. That would have been wiped off the slate if Bombardier was allowed to purchase.

Instead, it cost HD something like 80 million to shutter Buell and pay broken contracts etc.

Apparently the 1125 platform was "too tightly integrated" into the HD system to be sold... whatever...
As any Buell owner will tell you, we're treated like the red headed step children of the inbred cousins that are thrice removed from the family tree by HD.

"tightly integrated" was an interesting choice of words for a company that builds paint shakers. I saw a CityX at the Front St. dealership a while back, next to a Ulysses. Totally Mad Max in black/red trim, with wire mesh headlight protectors. Unfortunately, all I could afford were the pegs, which I bought from the parts department (for the Ninja).

In that case, the Buells were right near the doors--couldn't miss them, with their own display. It's a shame they didn't do better, but with a dealer network built around the mighty HD marketing dynamo ("even our stitches have horsepower") they were probably doomed no matter how decent they were.

It would be great for some of y'all to get Buells, we are vastly outnumbered.

Love my 1125R, by the way...

Had two cops stop me a couple weeks ago just to ask me a hundred questions about my bike ... still trying to get the drool off the bike. The retardedness of how Buell was shut down and not sold still is hard to comprehend exactly. HD retains all the rights and the sale of parts...but wtf is that worth? The tax right off and then the bail out must of some how been worth it.
If I listened to all those ignorant Buell bashers I wouldn't have had the opportunity of riding one awesome bike.

you obviously enjoy your xb12. I had a the Blast as my first bike and that sucker was indestructible. Maintenance was very minimal and the bike just started up fine after a highside and parking lot drops. Do you find that the xb12 is a hard kunt also?
