Something seems messed up with the priorities, when dealing with commoners.

I have only.been tested once; a week ago now. Appointment at Joseph Brant for 2:15 P.M. Pulled in at the drive thru at 2:10 and before I know it I was tested. Results actually were posted Wednesday night.

My wife's test was an even quicker turn around time. We may be the exception to the rule; I can only account for our own experiences.

Public health calls me daily to check in on me. Extrapolate that by the number of ongoing positive cases and that equates to a lot of work.

We'll have to see. It looks like it's appointment only now and not open to everyone.
Before, the nearest location was opened 9-3:30 & if you weren't lined up by 10 you likely weren't getting tested.
There are now also pharmacies that will "test eligible people without symptoms", which seems like a contradiction in terms - is it for school kids that had a runny nose?

Pharmacy testing is a joke. A political game at best. Very specific criteria in who they test (asymptomatic, not children . . . ) and they are doing something like max 10 tests a day at each location.

The appoinment booking is a mess. Phone lines open at 06:00, days quota is full long before 06:30. Not every location, but some. You need to find locations within driving distance where you can get tested when your local location is useless.
 
Poland is locking down hard right now. Their numbers have been skyrocketing and on Friday they announced that all weddings are cancelled (max of 5-10 people) on Saturday. People got too lax and social distancing, masks started going by the wayside, and all social norms were returning quickly.

That, along with the current protests over abortion are wreaking havoc on the entire country....**** show #1 over there. Plus they're enforcing quarantine for those coming in on Saturday, and with Canada no longer on the safe list...**** show.
 
Good news here. Public health has green lit me to exit quarantine. My wife is free on Friday. Apparently we are safe to be together now. I think we will phase reuniting so as to not stress my wife out. Perhaps a movie together tonight but socially distanced. Maybe tomorrow I come upstairs a bit and then sleep in the marital bed later this week.

My work does not want me back until sometime next week. I am still not well enough to work anyways so some more time off suits me fine.

I got a referral for an antibody study they are doing at McMaster's. I also want to see if I can donate my plasma. Anything I can contribute to provide some good out of this.

While there is always some room for improvement I am grateful for our health care system. When I needed testing and followup it was there for me and no out of pocket expenses except for my gas to get my butt to the testing site. Another preexisting condition added to my health resume but our system does not penalize for that.

Canada (like any other country) can always improve. However, I grateful for our health care system again and to live in a largely safe and law abiding society. Watching the news so much these past several years I cannot help but contrast to the goings on south of us. I have voted in so many elections since the late 1980s and I don't think I have ever waited even 10 minutes to vote. And, I have never worried about health care expenses in my retirement calculus except as a smaller element with respect to prescription copays. Sorry for the tangent. Like every other Country we have to remain vigilant. We can do better but we are not totally screwing this up either. Our government and insitutions are bloated and inefficient at times. When the rubber meets the road though they are still functioning.

I was aghast that Justice Barrett merited the U.S. Senate actually doing something; yet still no new relief for small businesses or average Americans. CERB may have its flaws and I'm sure there have been lots of waste. However, I would rather pay for that than the alternative which is to allow those less fortunate to drown.

No easy answers...

One of the problems with socialism is that we all get punished for the stupidity of the few.

It wouldn't be overly far fetched and possibly justice if the trillion or whatever this is going to cost us will partly come out of inheritance taxes. So Junior, you know that protest you went to that contributed to your parent's demise?

Yeah, the fat inheritance you were expecting will be short a Ferrari.

Actually I’m all for death taxes on the wealthiest. I say if your estate is worth $5m or more enjoy it to the max, when you check out or leave Canada, you payback society for all they provided - say 20%.

All kidding aside, I agree but it should be more gradual not step in all at once. $5M is as good a place to start as any.

I figure less than 1% of Canadians die with a >$5m estate, so the number of voters you alienate doesn’t cost much.

If your death was expected, couldn't you just gift most of your money to your kids just before you die and them not pay taxes on it?

When you have enough money, you can pay competent (or sketchy) advisors to shield you from tax. Now, day one of this new regime would be very profitable unless JT wrote in a loophole for his buddies. I know Brits that planned ahead to minimize inheritance tax (buy parents london flat early in life, they rent it from you so you have money to make mortgage payments). I know some asians whose parents have literal safe deposit boxes full of diamonds that JT can never find. Given time, the only people that pay are those that dont plan ahead.

I read an article today where a 36 year old was just gifted $8,000,000 worth of investments to be split with his siblings by his parents. He wanted to take 0.25% of his share ($5000 per year) to go travelling and the parents were having none of it, they said that money was for retirement. Having millions invested when you are 36 that is completely untouchable makes for a very strange retirement where your income skyrockets after you stop work.
 
Speaking of large inheritances, I wonder if the Estate of Barry & Honey Sherman was ever probated and settled? Their murderers have not been caught but does that delay the settlement of accounts with the Estate? There'd be a few bucks involved there. I never did understand why the family demolished the house either. Weird.

Lots of sketchiness there. The family was arguing for perpetual sealed records as public information on where the money went endangered their lives. Super dodgy. That argument could be applied to any estate. Whether the estate has 50K or 500M, the amount that is accessible to be burgled is probably not vastly different.

any update to this case? It stank of something unpleasant when I last read about it. Not a nice family.
