4-5 months ago I would have agreed. Not anymore - Ford seems like he’s just grasping at straws more and more now, just bumbling from one decision to another, and not admitting when somethings wrong or broken (IE big box stores being wide open for business and flooded with shoppers right now, but mom and pop shops closed) and fixing it.
Are we back to a "Who's worse" comparison?

Ford and the logic of letting the big boxes open to minimize outings is sketchy at best. When a person lies, misrepresents or exaggerates they undermine their credibility. We need creditable leaders.

Right now I could do with a new pair of winter shoes, an awkward on line purchase because there is no guarantee they'll fit. Returns are a PITA. I could go to Walmart except they carry crap shoes.

I could take a long drive and go to a less restricted area but that would not be in the spirit of of beating this thing. It would be like driving only slightly under the influence.

When reopening happens the small stores won't see as much of a recovery boom as the needs of the shoppers have been taken care of by the big boxes.

Remember that store that carried some nice unique items and had good service?

RIP, they've been replaced by a multinational big box that has a marketing team deciding what you'll be allowed to buy. And they're all made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

I think most of know there are real obstacles and things can change. But they know that too, and part of leadership is making sure your vision is sound and well understood, take ownership for your mistakes, set and manage realistic expectations, and you don't treat the voters like a dumbass proletariat. I think Ford is doing this better than Trudeau.

Whether Canada is faring well compared to the rest of the world in flattening/deaths etc. is a separate topic of discussion. Generally I think we are doing well in a relative sense, but others may disagree.
Just watched his military guy explain how vaccines will be delivered as well as the division of responsibilities (who does what) between feds, industry, military and provinces. It was clear and easy to understand - the way a leader does things.

Some timelines/dates were missing, he made it clear key he knew what those missing parts were and that he had focus on getting them sorted in time to meet the deadline.

Without saying it directly, he made it clear the civil service PSPC had things bungled up and that he was parachuted in to lead the distribution mission. I'll credit JT for realizing a no-nonsense 'get-r-done' approach was necessary, and EO for applying the heat needed to get off the mark.

As expected, feds today confirmed that Q1 vaccines are for 3M people. Big surprise that they have been speaking in ambiguous "doses" to this point. /s

So one of the things missing from Freelanders fall budget was some reality that 'on average' Canadians had about a net zero decrease in wages and 'on average' managed a 20+% in savings. So where is the economic stimulus to spend us back into the black? Will we come out the other side spending federal relief money like drunken sailors? Or just pile it up?
Are the CERB recipients that live with their parents , pay zero rent , going to carry us out this billion dollar hole?

I think Ford could do better with allowing small business with the lockdown in Toronto. All that traffic, literally and in store is just heading out of TO to surrounding areas, I've been going to Pickering myself and the streets/stores are much busier then normal. So some suffer while the rest prosper. I understand trying to squash this spread is the top priority but people are suffering. And apparently insurance costs are trippling or out of control, which is also something Ford should look into, that seems outrageous.

I heard on the radio a bunch of business are banning together to send Ford a request to open etc. This is the busiest time of the year for retailers and a bunch are locked out.

They sent the letter. Ford said he felt bad for them.

Quick Google search is your friend.

The reason we will have so many doses (to the envy of many other countries) is because our government threw all the jello at the wall with the expectation that only some of it would stick. There was plenty of question about how many of the candidate vaccines would be effective and deemed safe. It was unexpected that as many passed that scrutiny (effective and apparently safe based on current data that's out there) as have happened. So, in short, almost all the jello stuck. The money was spent no matter what (in order to have things move as fast as they have, and to ensure supply, many/most governments (including ours) committed the money without any guarantee of product, so in short, we're going to get a crap ton of product in the end. A product that's going to be in massive demand.

If the government had taken a different approach, IE not spreading the risk amongst many candidate companies, or just being cheap and not throwing the jello at the wall, there would be people screaming at the government for NOT doing all those things and "leaving Canadians unprotected" blah blah blah.

This is a picture perfect example of "Damned if they do, damned if they don't".

Glad to see that there are people around that have memories shorter than mine.
The National Research Council of Canada and CanSino Biologics Inc. announce collaboration to advance vaccine against COVID-19 - Canada.ca

Remember the jello Kraken was only released a couple of months ago. There's been over a year now since the virus appeared to release a plan.

Ford needs to get off his butt on this. We've had the tracing app for months. Is it crap? Do we know where the virus is spreading? Can we not shut down the offenders without affecting anybody else? Do businesses with lobby groups or donors get preferential treatment?

Some of the same criticisms of the Feds, go to the Province. We need honest, transparent, clear communication.

There are people running around without masks, because they don't trust the sources, and there are equally bright people running around ridiculing their intelligence.

I am running the tracing app. I know that I was in contact with a confirmed case. Not notification from the app (he didnt have phone on, he wasnt running the app or he didnt put code in).

Afaik, that workplace was treating covid as a regular occurence (kick out all close contacts for 14 days). I dont know the details but it sounds like they try to keep public health out of the loop. I havent seen anything that legally requires anyone to report anything. Quite a few workplaces are running private testing.

Wife was exposed at work, she is not allowed in for two weeks, her work requires her to get a test (no issue with that) but they wanted her to wait a week to not get a false negative (again not much issue with that other than the week wait is really two weeks from the potential exposure). No free thinking on the protocols, just a week from being notified. If it is negative she still needs to wait the second week.

The crazy part, public health Ontario said she has to self isolate until tested negative (seems OK) but the kids and I do not? If she has it, we have it? Schools said the kids should attend school in class if no symptoms, unless she has a positive test THEN they should stop going. So they will have been in class a week before we know....

I really think this is how the mess is spreading, it is not small business.

I feel for retailers in the lockdown areas, they are getting the short end of the stick.

I don't know how they could possibly do it differently . We know the outcome of going full America - not that appealing to me.

You could draw the line at essential supplies as opposed to the current line of stores that offer essential supplies. Maybe slightly more equitable but still not great. Very little the govt does will help the ma and pa furniture store survive.

I guess you could, that would move the fairness needle a bit... unless you worked somewhere that makes, delivers, or uses non essential items.

2x4s, disposable diapers, knitting yarn, kids toys, geek games, blueberry-garlic IPA and other craft beer,... where do you draw the line?

Nobody would starve to death in a week. I would draw the line at a proper lockdown "stay the f at home". I would not be a good politician.

If it were me I'd just say it's a curbside world, everyone open 9 till 9, no in store shopping, be home by curfew (10). Order by phone, email, website only - no in person shopping.

Seems reasonable. Allows you to get things if you truly "needed" them but minimizes shopping out of boredom. Still swings the pendulum in favour of big stores with lots of staff but that is really hard to avoid.

Bix box always has an advantage. Might be good for the little guys! I remember CTC trying to pick and pack for curbside in the spring - that was a good argument for lowering the minimum wage.

What is? Infections? Free-dumbs? Crowding at big-box stores? Panic buying?
ALL

Lots of GTA plates and places like St. Jacobs are packed
Cases count are at all time highs (Waterloo Region COVID-19 summary)
Gyms are packed
University / College exams will be over soon so the kids will go back home probably
^ Conestoga College, University of Waterloo and Laurier University are the 3 big ones here

@ DOUG FORD - Be a leader and flatten the damn curve

Also I went to the Conestoga Mall last weekend (black friday/cyber monday weekend) because I had to ship something. It was packed to the brim with line ups outside of most stores. I found it basically impossible to maintain a 6 ft distance between everybody that weekend... Don't get me started on the line up at the Starbucks :(
