I work with an Exhibit company that focus on tradeshows, this Virus is about to close us down, and I won't give names however it is a big company. We just let go over a dozen people this month, people who've been with the company for ages and very good at their jobs, we've all been politely told everyone is on the chopping block in the coming weeks if this doesn't get sorted. My dad is a contractor and his clients are cancelling because of similar concerns of loosing jobs.

This whole ordeal is a mess, let alone whatever physical implication it has, it has created a new breed of anti-social society like never before. I'm not even sure if i'll be riding this summer due to costs or not having a job.
That's horrible, and I'm shocked as to how quickly this took effect to that level. You'd figure such a crisis would take months to feel the full force, but this has just gotten started recently.
I hope things pick up, because it's normal people like us that'll feel the brunt of this.

MLS (soccer) suspended. NLL (Lacrosse) suspended. Junos cancelled. St Pattys parade cancelled. Ugly but probably smart moves.

As for trade shows, this is going to burn for a very long time imo. There have been a number of things over the years that caused cancellation of a limited number of shows and that caused some chaos within organizations that relied heavily upon them for traffic or big announcements. Given that this will potentially shut down global trade shows for the foreseeable future, companies will try other methods to accomplish their goals. Once trade shows resume, the participant companies may determine that the alternative methods are an acceptable (or maybe even better) alternative and not return.

All in person meetings have just been forbidden at my office. Everyone who didn't already have one was given a laptop in expectation we'll be working from home in the future.

Yikes.

Maybe we should be buying Dell/Lenovo as there could easily be a run on laptops as many companies follow a similar path.

Unfortunately it’s got to the point where people are being shamed for inaction regardless of common sense but it’s hard to say what level of action is an appropriate response. It seems most are taking the defcon 1 approach. I went for a meal at a local place in this Costa Rican resort town yesterday and the owner came out and sprayed hand sanitizer on me and my wife before we had a chance to look at the menu. We carry the stuff everywhere and use it all day anyway so it was good to save some.

My sister-in-law in Italy broke her collarbone skiing a couple of weeks ago. Her surgery has been pushed back again and again because the hospitals are at capacity dealing with respiratory ailments and severe cases from COVID-19.

I've been watching some people's attitudes on social media about how this pandemic is overblown because of the low mortality rate. Sure you probably won't die of it if you're under 60, but there are a lot of senior citizens and others with existing ailments who will take up space in the hospitals because of COVID-19. So as long as you or your loved ones don't plan on hurting yourself and seeking medical assistance for car accidents, heart attacks, slips on ice, etc. then yeah, don't worry about it.

The isolation and restrictions on travel are not an over-reaction. It's a way of slowing the spread of the disease so the hospitals can ramp up as well as deal with medical emergencies at a reduced rate, instead of all at once, like in Italy. Doctors in Italy are now having to decide who they choose to save and who they will let die when patients come in through the ER doors.

If you read about people being cavalier about the severity of COVID-19 and not respecting self-isolation procedures, washing hands and gathering in crowded spaces then please educate them. We are two weeks away from becoming like Italy if we don't take this seriously.

Been in tradeshows for a while, and lot of this is true. Larger companies stick to trade shows due to networking and potential investors, like the PDAC show that just happened, not many people will close a $100mill deal on mining supplies or invest without seeing their offerings, so these shows will continue.

However, as an industry, it does have to adapt and where I work we have, from doing trailers to mall activation's, even work for Pearson airport. Prior to the Covid things were booming, growing really well and we had business booked for a 2-3 years solid with major contracts, talking millions. Right now, as of yesterday, all those got cancelled overnight, people aren't going to malls so those are getting axed too, we do museum's, and people don't want to go there now either, so it's not just trade shows, its a whole lot of markets.

My industry is sports advertising and there will be some long faces at the office today

What are the networks going to play with no live sports? Replay classic games to try to get some sports eyeballs or just slap in rom-com crap they have in the can?

Awesome. All the premiers just met with JT so they (and their staff) are all locked up too. Having a face-to-face meeting with all of the countries leaders to discuss a viral outbreak should be a meme for democracy.

If testing and screening is a sufficient protocol, why are people running all of these two-week quarantines? Although testing and screening may catch some, it seems more like a PR stunt than a legitimate effort to stunt the spread.

Like I said Orange Man Bad to some no matter what he does .

Does anyone believe he will be working from home . JT just got two more weeks off for to smoke his dope .

If his wife gets it maybe our response will be a bit more critical.

As for Trump's decision to stop flights coming in...I think it's good but too little too late. They (and Canada) should really step up quarantine zones in my uneducated opinion.

Shut it down, same as Italy. Sure the market will take a beating. But you can see decreases in new cases in China, Korea, and Italy.

Princess and viking have finally suspended all new cruises (they had to be losing their shirts with one week cruises tying up ships for three weeks).

University St Patrick's days parties coming up. Let’s see what happens there.
I'm sure the parties will continue....but the parade is cancelled.

This is why I'm all for mandatory quarantine....people can't be trusted to follow it on their own.
