i doubt anyone else cares, other than the folks directly affected, about what cops are doing here with giving a certain basic fundamentally important issue, 'show your plates' that applies to all, some special attention
if it matters so much to someone playing with rear plates/fenders that you then end up in a cop chit chat, too bad

Could not as a former officer disagree more, with many of the statements.
IF your riding ANY style bike, you shouldn't be subjected to a traffic stop unless you have done something illegal, OR your bike has improper equipment as per the HTA. There will be times when an officer stops a vehicle for what they believe to be an infraction, but upon closer inspection feels it may not warrant a violation. They may, choose to issue a formal warning, (which is entered in the computer system. They may also choose just to discuss the issue with the operator and if they feel the issue will be resolved, leave it at that.
But to simply decide that ALL sport bikes are "guilty bey association" is wrong headed and potentially dangerous route to be followed.
So it isn't a "tough luck you choose to buy a sport bike or an SS, you need to suck it up getting stopped constantly" issue. It is an issue of penalizing those who ARE committing the offences.
I do agree the 401 stunting crowd is drawing unnecessary attention to the riding community, and just as with the person who launched the beer can at Roger's Center last night they should be pointed out by those who are around them and know who they are. I am sure if a few got turned in and faced charges it would "lower" the intensity of the spot light.

Agreed, and its nice to hear this coming from a former cop.
This would be nice in an ideal world, but I don't see it happening. Just like none of the officers beating Adam Nobody at the G20 protest turned themselves or the others in, and none of the officers who were nearby did the same. If the police want this kind of public support, they need to lead by example.

it's my understanding cops can pull over anyone at anytime for a documentation check, then they may also see something else to chat about
ss bikers are known to play fast & loose with their back ends, including show your plates
i'd say stunting, swarming etc mainly brings serious attention directly to ss styled bikes, tuff luck for the legit ones that get caught up in a cop response, that no one else even cares about, including this argument

In the weeks since this stunting nonsense happened, I've lost track of the number of times that I've ridden past cops on my own bikes (which are all sport bikes).
Nothing has happened.
But ... my bikes have legit license plates with up-to-date registration stickers and the plates are mounted properly, and all my lights work and the mirrors are both there.

I would have understood this happening as a result of another moving violation where we got pulled over for something then he noticed the plates on top of that.
We were literally parked for about 5 minutes walking around deciding where to eat. The PC saw our bikes, stopped and backed up to the nearest free parking spot, got out of his car to go to our bikes and inspect them. We watched this happen thinking nothing of it and sat down to eat.
He literally sat there and waited for us.
Where I see this going with insurance rates increasing and the scrutiny from police etc.
People, especially younger people are not going to bother getting insurance or license plates.
More and more you will see non registered bikes on the street running from the police.
Why bother spending money on getting plated and insured when you can just ride and say fxuk the police.
If I was a teenager right now, it would most likely be my reality. Fortunately I don't have to resort to that now to enjoy my bike.
BTW. The same cop stopped near my bike while I was in the gym and waited for me to come out and to give me a ticket. Yeah, I totally deserve it but I'm going to fight it regardless.
I'm sure that makes many here happy.

what happened to just getting a nice license plate eliminator that mounts close to the original spot and just use some more streamlined lights. I get ****** when I see bikes with these type1 plates. might as well mount the plate to the shock. what happened to kids these days.

Please clarify. Were you ticketed for the same thing you were warned about and didn't fix, or was it a completely different infraction?
Most definitely seems like the same cop stumbled across his bike for a second time and noticed he didn't appreciate the warning.
To the OP, if it was a more standard aftermarket tidy tail you'd have some grounds for defense here, but there is no way a plate mounted all the way at the base of the sub-frame is going to fly, and honestly, it shouldn't.

All vehicles that have illegal equipment should be ticketed, no exceptions. All owners of these vehicles are entitled to their day in court, no matter if they had been previously warned for the same offence, but good luck with a positive outcome.

I replaced it with the Type 2.
Mine is home made and very similar to the type 1 but mounts further towards the back of the bike.
The PC said that mine was "marginal", meaning it's borderline illegal. So I flipped it around to be even closer to the back and facing more upwards towards any cameras.
I doubt the PC recognized me as all my gear was different and I was leaving the gym with my son, my bike is completely stock. Maybe he did but did not in any way hint that he did and I barely interacted with him.
I will absolutely post what happens at court but it will be some time from now.

Likely didn't recognize you, but certainly recognized the bike, and the plate, and that he had given a previous warning.
