Coolant recommendation

Reviving an old thread because I have a stupid question...I read online that Yamaha uses 60/40 mix coolant. I have a jug of the Honda type 2 50/50 mix that I wanted to use up on my FZ8.

Is it a big difference between the two mixtures? Can I use it or will it cause issues with the cooling system? Not a big deal for me to get the recommended type just don't want to waste what I already have.

It's not relevant unless you are planning to have the bike outside in -40 weather.

If Yamaha recommends 60% water 40% coolant, you can make that out of 50/50 via a mixture of 80% coolant-blend and 20% distilled/deionized water.

Just realized that the Yamaha coolant is actually 60 ethylene glycol 40 water so can't mix 50 50 to get that ratio.

Would have to get concentrated coolant and mix with water...why do you have to be different Yamaha? I don't think I've ever seen that mixture before.

The ratio isn't important the freezing point is.
Test it. They make a cheap tool thing for that.

I have one, current coolant tests ok but it's dark and I'm ocd about maintainance so it's gotta go. Just don't feel like mixing coolant to get protection for temps it'll never see.

Not too worried, 50 50 premix is good to minus 34F. If it gets that cold in my garage I'll have bigger problems than the coolant in my bike freezing.

Could be worse, you should see how much my excavator takes, and she might well see -40 this winter :|

My K9 GSXR 750 also recommends a 60-40 same as you. But i just run 50/50 Total. I found the same info you listed further down last week and my buddy who’s a mechanic said it doesnt really matter unless like you said, it goes to that freezing point. Im good so I think youre good!

Yes; coolant for Honda car engines will be aluminum-compatible and that's what is needed.

There are different additive chemistries in various coolants, some of which aren't compatible with each other, but all of which can be addressed by flushing out what's in there before filling up the cooling system so that you are not mixing additive chemistries.

edit: See post #16 and onward in this very thread.

Hello folks, will the coolant for Honda cars work for motorcycles?

Thinking of getting this one for my VFR , price seems good.

Be very wary of aftermarket coolants that claim to work in many vehicles. If you check the fine print, they often comply with standards decades out of date or dont comply at all. I'm not saying that wont work in your bike, but to me the presence of honda on the label means zero. Read what standards it actually complies with and if they are grossly out of date, I wont buy it as a matter of principle. I'll give my money to a more honest company.

I am 90% sure that all those manufacturer-specific Recochem coolants are literally the exact same **** with different dyes added

I would check the owners manual as someone previously stated to ensure you understand which type of coolant the cooling circuit was designed for, then choose a brand that makes something compatible if you don't want to buy the OEM stuff.

Pure water actually makes the best coolant, and the more you add to it, the worse it gets. The only reason for the antifreeze is, well, to lower the freezing point (while also providing lubrication and corrosion protection). Based on the chart above, I would only need 80% water since my garage never goes below 18F.

for folks in the FAR north, 60/40 IS better than 50/50. the extra bit of coolant helps at both temp extremes.

-35 C or colder? isn't totally uncommon to see a cold spell like this almost every winter..up north.

going to timmin's to nail shania twain? better check your coolant lol
