Contour/GoPro and wind noise

Does anyone know how to minimize the wind noise? I have tried taping earplugs against it but it didn't work.

And is there anyway to capture the exhaust sound versus all the other crap (wind lol).

When I'm vlogging (which hasn't been frequently unfortunately) I attach an external mic to my GoPro 2, which has a standard 3.5mm mic-in jack... (The 1st- and 3rd-gen GoPros don't have this, the 3rd-gen has some stupid USB adapter you need I believe...)

I wound up using a $10 "Genius" brand clip-on mic which gets stuffed up into my helmet, placed about an inch or two off-side from my mouth. To combat wind noise, I covered it with a spare mic foam from my Scala kit. The audio result is surprisingly good from that setup, and it actually captures some of the bike sounds too (exhaust/motor sounds) which is an added bonus.

If you're trying to attach a mic somewhere on the bike itself -- no idea how well that would work. When I've bike-mounted my cameras (I've got GoPro2's and used to use a ContourHD 1080) I've had mixed results in both audio and video, though I find my dash-mounted GoPro gets reasonable A/V quality. For both the dash- and helmet- mounted GoPros, I generally have the non-waterproof cover on the back so that audio capturing works best. If you use the waterproof backdoor, it'll filter out a bit too much of the sound.

With the ContourHD if you use the waterproof case it reduces the wind-noise significantly - but without it, I haven't found anything that works. Tape, foam tape, nothing worked... I get good sound recording through my Sena Bluetooth headset connected to my iPhone though.

It has nothing to do with the tech of the mic in those cameras. Any camera with internal mic will experience wind noise. You have to find a way to shield the mike from the front end wind by mounting position or by using external mic, if your camera has that input.

Windcutter will somewhat cut it down, but you cannot expect miracles from a fluffy piece of foam ... LOL

Enjoy the video, throw away the audio track and replace it with something more pleasing ... :-)
