Hey guys, quick question for all you contour owners...

I have an older go pro and have never been happy with it. I'm thinking about picking up a contour.

Do you know if I can run the contour without the waterproof sealed case in dusty conditions?

Specifically it's appealing to me if I can use it in one of my motocross races without the extra weight etc. not sure how "weather resistant" they are without the case.

Some of the older kits didn't even come w a waterproof case and claim waterproof to 1m?

How waterproof are you talking about? Like heavy rain or dunking it in water?

I've ridden in heavy rain conditions with it with no problem. First thing to hit the ground at 30km/h on concrete and only had a couple scratches so its durable... Dusty conditions would once again depend on what you consider as dusty conditions.

But - in the year that I've had it riding in all sorts of weather, I've never had an issue with water or dust getting to the internals.

thanks for the info.
It actually wont be getting wet, but the track conditions get VERY dusty, sometimes so much so you can't see until you pass through it.

Looking at the 2 current models here, it suggests that the new contour+2 isnt even waterproof at all? Would that make it dustproof anyways?

Dustproof... good question.. My contour gps took a 200 ft plunge attached to a 30+ lb R/C plane into a snow bank, where it stayed for about 10 minutes. It was still recording when we recovered it, no corruption in the replay at all. Made me realize these are tough cameras, I wouldn't worry too much about dust

What don't you like about the GoPro? Have you looked at the Drift HD Ghost? It's waterproof to 3m without a case and has a rotatable lens so you can mount it in funky ways and still get the video right way up.

Note: If you end up getting one, secret: As long as the arrow on the lens bezel is pointing up, your video will be the right way up. Totally ignore what it looks like on the built in LCD display!

I've never heard of anyone with issues related to dust. As said above, these things take beatings and they're nowhere near the size of the gopro. The roam2 is waterproof for sure without the extra case.

thanks for the post, I think I'll go that route.
I know that Polaroid has a nice new one thats much cheaper too and waterproof.

What I don't like about the roam is Id really like to use my iphone as a viewfinder. Makes aiming your cameras so much easier.
Any model without some form of viewfinder or aiming lasers suck. Theres nothing worse than doing a lap to find out when you got home all you got was your fender :(

The Roam has lasers to set up recording angle.
Pick up the waterproof case - keep any dust etc out of the microphone area.
Makes the sound quality much better too IMO... at least at the track.

Thx for the help. I think I'll try a contour.

If I take a rock off the lens or the glass is there a way to replace it? Wonder what happens if I get roosted :/

I heard you can just buy a replacement lens and just replace it yourself although it would void the warranty.

Also as someone else pointed out, there is a flat line laser you can activate by the press of a button which also flashes indicators for battery life and memory left (although, from my experience, they're pretty random... I've had it flash "almost full memory card" with 16GB/32GB of space left).

If you didnt know yet, you can rotate the lens 180 degrees to make sure your shot is level (which is great when you use the laser).

Sticking a profile mount to your helmet can get tricky though as you only get one shot to stick it on :P I wasted a few mounts when I realized that I stuck it on facing straight ahead only to realize that when I wore the helmet, it pointed down. I think the best way to mount it is to get someone else to stick it on while you wear the helmet ;)
