Intellivision was originally intended to become a computer, but they never did come out with the keyboard etc. adapter for it.
I was a little more than eight, as the C64 was apart almost as much as it was together. I made an EPROM burner for it, and could burn BIOS chips.
I missed that we got a PS2 at one point, when they were obsolete. I think we left it at the old house when we moved.
For myself, Sony is living off of their name from decades ago, and MS hasn't really had a good name to begin with, so it's kind of a toss up.
I'd pick your favourite game that only comes on one or the other and go buy that console.
