Computer Techs get in here

so i have a bit of a computer problem that has me baffled

i just built my computer and since i got it ive had this problem

if i watch videos whether its streamed or thru media player my computer freezes at a random point through out the video (its random everytime)

it also freezes during regular internet browsing or listening to music but this is less frequent than with videos

ive tried reformatting and i have sufficient RAM i suspect that its either my motherboard video card or its the internal heat but i dont know how to isolate the problem!!

Did you put liquid silver on the processor before you put the cooler on?

no i didnt im fairly new at hardware so im assuming the liquid silver goes between the fan and the cpu?

where do i get this liquid?

btw i have an 1155 socket mobo before the recall

Since u built it recently, I doubt it is an issue with resources since even today's basic computers can handle all that. This is a random thing. First download and intall a reliable codec pack. Next, update all flash as well as browser and drivers (sound, video, motherboard, etc). If all that fails, it is likely faulty hardware. I would return and exchange ASAP.

If it is not supplied with CPU, it is an extra which is not required but good to have.

You can get liquid silver (it's really called thermal grease) at any small computer store or a place like Tiger Direct. Spread it over your processor evenly (not with your finger) then put your cooler (aluminum block with fan on top) on. You may have a square of thermal grease already on the underside of your block, sometimes it isn't enough or your block is not sitting correctly. Thermal grease costs less then 7 bucks for a very small tube.

You can tell for sure if it is heat if you run some processor intense applications or download a processor stress test off the net.

make sure in device manager you have all drivers up to date, no yellow exclamation points...do you have an old video card to try in the machine or other ram...check all cabling to make sure nothing is loose...is the air that is being blown out of the machine really hot or warm? make sure all fans are running that you have installed...you should have some utils for checking internal temperature, or at least most motherboards have that built on nowadays.

the cpu fan isnt a steel block its a fan that completely surrounds the top of my cpu

all drivers arent up to date but when i first installed my computer i installed ALL drivers and updated everything and my computer froze more often now its liveable but still annoying

btw all boxes were thrown out so no returning (FML)

ok, it should look like this...Cpu/Socket,thermal grease, heat sink with fan on top...I hope you're not saying that you don't have a heat sink

alright to avoid embarassment ill check to make sure tomorrow and ill take a picture for approval but im pretty sure it was just a simple fan ontop of the cpu

as for stress tests im doing one now and my cpu is running at 100 percent

below is a picture of my comp stats 10 mins into the test

Your running way to hot for normal temp check this thread, I am not sure if this is your exact model processor but it will be close

okay if my cpu was the culprit for my computer freezing randomly why didnt it freeze during the test?

my only assumption is that when i do something to cause my computer to freeze it "startles" my cpu but would the sudden spike in temperature cause my computer to freeze up

im also under the assumption that the stress test (prime95) gradually brought up my cpu temperature which is why it didnt freeze instantly

but again, you guys are the experts (excluding the mac user... eww macs) im more knowledgable in software than i am in hardware

it might not freeze during the test because of throttling...the cpu's performance is throttled when it heats up keeping it cooler. For sure you should look at getting your cores temp down....since it's a graphics freeze (streaming video) you could also check your video card seating and if it's on board then it could be heat related. It's hard to troubleshoot something that's not in front of you....I have built more than 200 machines... different boards and cards behave differently, memory that hasn't been seated correctly etc.

ya, you're running way too hot. Make sure you're CPU fan is running. If it is running then you'll have to take it apart and clean off any residue that's there. Then add some thermal grease. All you need is a small amount (a blob the size a grain of rice) then put your stock CPU heat sink with fan back on. Another thing you can do is upgrade your stock cooler and it will come with thermal grease.

Also, un-install all the crappy codecs you installed and install VLC.

+1
My friend had the same problem on his setup with a Q6700 and upgrading the thermal paste + changing the cooler fixed it.

No - there is definitely a heatsink (might be PART of the cpu fan, but there will DEFINITELY be a heatsink).

And when you apply thermal grease to the top of the cpu before placing the heatsink/fan, like others mentioned JUST A TINY BIT!! I've seen more damage from too much of that stuff than not enough. A very very thin film is all you need.

But according to your temps during the stress test, I'd be surprised if your heatsink/fan is even installed properly... That's too high, and lack of thermal grease doesn't really explain it, unless it's a COMPLETE TOTAL CRAP one that's included!
