Collision coverage - necessary?

Hey guys,

I want your opinions on the collision coverage. Do you think it's a must have or worth the extra premium that i pay?

EDIT: do you have the collision coverage?

I wanna insure a ninja 250, around 2008. So i'm willing to pay 3500 to 4000 the maximum. With collision coverage of $500 deductible, my quote bumps up by $300 in total, $50 per month for 6 months.

I did some research and my impression is that collision only covers you when you are at fault. Given that the bike is not that expensive and there's a $500 deductible, does it make sense for me to pay $300 extra hard cash to have this coverage?

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

If you can live with your bike being destroyed or severely damaged if you crash it yourself, than no.

For peace of mind knowing your bike will be covered in any circumstances, than yes.

Thanks for the input! Do you mind me asking if you have this coverage? Lol

I wouldnt have posted this question if it only costs me $6 per month lol! That's a very good deal. Somehow my coverage costs me extra $300 in total.

Thanks! :)

Well price out your fairings from the dealership. One side alone is $300.

You do the math, and figure out if its worth it or not. If your handy and know to fix your stuff up, skip it if your financially unstable.
If not, spend the money.

Good advise.

No im not handy and yes im financial stable. So probably i will get it then. Thanks!

But just keep in mind that if you do crash and make a claim, its an an-fault claim (single vehicle accident). Now are you willing to make a claim for a $1500 or $2000 (random number) repair cost? Is it worth it in the long run to repair it yourself? Are you actually saving yourself money or just in the short term side of things?

e.g. Is insurance hike for 6 years > repair cost? Is insurance hike for 6 years < repair cost? etc.

I have collision coverage.. but It's probably a waste of money for me, simply because circumstances would have to be extreme for me to actually make a claim.. IE. bike totaled. For a few thousand dollar repair, I would just suck it up and pay it myself even though my deductible is only 500, because I don`t the accident on my insurance record. Mainly because it will affect your bike premium AS WELL as your auto premiums... saying it out loud makes me wonder why I bother to pay the colison premiums.. but it`s really not that much, and I suppose I`ll be glad I have it if there is ever something I couldnt afford to fix..

Good perspective too... Im getting a ninja 250, a cheap bike. So it's definitely something that i need to think about, the long term insurance cost vs repairing it myself.

Ur right. In my situation there's nothing that i cant afford to fix on a ninja 250 cuz the worst case scenario would be spending $3500 to get another one...

here is a question for you... how much are you paying for your bike? are you willing to put that much money in the trash if you (you @ fault) crash it?

I had my rebel with basic coverage for the first year, I only spent 2500 on her, the yr after I put fire and theft which was an added 100 bucks. My new bike runs on full coverage.

Think about what happens with a claim, for instance if you have a collision that causes $1500 in damage, you pay a $500 deductible, inurance pays $1000, but then your insurance increases by ~20% for 3 years or more. Now you have paid $500+3500*.2*3=$2700 for a $1500 problem. Collision pays off if your bike is written off and you stop riding, but if you plan on continuing riding, just paying for repairs normally ends up cheaper.

If you are riding a duc and your bike is worth $20,000, a collision can easily cost $10000 or more to repair and collision insurance starts to make more sense. In your case, your maximum liability is the price of a 250 (ie. less than $5000) and I wouldn't bother (assuming it's not financed and you can afford to lose the $5000).

Fire and theft claim does not affect your premiums. A comprehensive claim does.

This bike, my 2011 Ninja 1000, is the first motorcycle I've had with collision & comprehensive on it. All my other bikes I could walk away from if I binned them, not this one. I considered lack of collision as an incentive not to do anything stupid with my bikes.

I'm willing to pay around $3500, with hard limit $4000. So i was thinking if god forbid i do have to spend 3000 on the fix, i may just go get another one since i wouldnt dare to drive a beat up bike with heavy fixes anyways...

Your numbers made the whole picture much clearer... Thanks very much.

Actually i would have to spend 3000 for a 1500 problem cuz it's 2700 plus 300 premium that i would have paid for the coverage lol!

You are right. I have decided I wont bother with this coverage for a ninja 250...

Yup as you have chosen, lower value bike = less necessary to get it covered.

If you want you can even put that extra money youd be paying in a savings account for 'in case of accident' fund.

Funny story, got my rsx wayyyy back, paid one month of insurance, and totalled it exactly one month later. Talk about getting your money's worth. I think this year i prolly just finished paying off in premium what they paid out. (+ i got 1st time forgiveness so not affecting my premium :D)

Is this 1st rime forgiveness a standard practice through all insurance companies? I have set my mind on riders plus cuz they have the best quote for me. Not sure if they have this.
