Coffee and meaningful talk?

This all seems very North American. It’s an alien concept to open up to a stranger and have that solve things. If I want to vent to someone that’s what my golf buddy is for and that’s free.
I think it’s one of those things that has gained some popularity in the last few years with 20 somethings. Most practitioners I’ve seen seem to be self employed, practicing multiple services like personal trainer, yoga instructor, artist/writer/poet, event planner, blogger, artisanal coffee crafter…

I feel like it's a "nutritionist" to a dietician. The former is a made-up nothing title, while the latter is an accredited and earned title. The fact that being a life coach seems to be trending among early 20-somethings (whom I'd trust to provide no more insight than a cantaloupe to someone twice their age), instantly screams a red flag to anyone claiming to do this.

No offense to the op, but if you studied engineering, why on earth are you a life coach? Don't mean to sound harsh... but come on now.
No offense taken. I was a researcher on a health coaching study that became about much more than health for participants. It had such a positive impact, I decided to get trained. Trained life coaches will likely explain that it isn't therapy or consulting.

One thing cognitive science shows us is that our minds are subject to illusion, and so more the insight into oneself is usually a good thing. How one gets that is manifold, but that one does is key. If it's a golf buddy, great

Amazing how a post that started off about listening has shifted in all these different ways, including insight into oneself and how one finds that

Many of these kinds of studies are among the most non-reproducible research performed. I have to look at some similar research from time to time and it’s incredibly difficult to get meaningful results from it, so much so that it’s practically useless.

I still think that the Life coach/therapist kind of service is more applicable to a certain kind of person rather than as a general benefit to society as a whole.

The company booked a one day time management course for the sales force and we expected the usual blah, blah, blah.

The guy started off by saying when he sets his goals for the year the first thing he does is book his vacation. WHAT???

He had our attention and I still refer to his comments. He handed out note pads with a heading "Things to do tomorrow" and explained you set tomorrows goals today or you're too slow out of the gate. Family time was included

Another course covered communications but it wasn't about better emails but rather the emotions of communications.

If you're the leader of a team that is supposed to work 9-5 on a three week project and someone shows up late you have to know why. Was it a one day oopsie or are there along term family problems and the project has to be reworked?

Asking "Why were you late" without sounding like a weasel or Nazi is tricky.

Those are different courses but my first problem with the life coach thing is that the coach needs to know every intimate detail of the subject's life, stuff they wouldn't tell their lawyer, priest or psychiatrist. The coach isn't sworn to the same standards of secrecy.

I got that for free working in France. Went for coffee one day in the summer after my colleagues had got back from summer holidays and they were crowded round a bunch of travel magazines. “What are you doing?” “Planning the winter holidays”.

Turns out having something to look forward to helps your mood. Who knew.

I’m in the need to have something to look forward to camp . We are always planning the ‘what’s next?’ .
While I derive satisfaction from a job well done , it’s that cash flow to allow me to do what I want on my time that matters .

If you have that in place (the cash flow), then consider your life well lived. You won't need a life coach.

IF you're approaching retirement and wondering how CPP/OAS will cover your bar tab -- maybe a life coach is for you.

It is definitely better working because I need something to do than needing to work

Want to find a group needing to learn focus and organization??

Go to a fast food joint near a high school at lunch time when the cell phone zombies come in.

“217, your order. 217, 217 your order. Meanwhile 217 has stepped outside to make a phone call, eventually coming in to get their food and complaining about it being cold.

@tiz just popped into my mind to follow up on this thread. How's it been going? Hope it's going well!

Hey MP, thanks for checking in! Except for the electrical probs with my bike, all's well. "Being human is a trip", as a friend of mine says.
What's been the best thing so far about your summer?

What’s summer? I woke up NY morning and today is mid-July…

Can’t believe how fast time flies nowadays.

So I was intrigued by an article on listening (actually a listening bar!), and wondered if I can practice my listening with some of you? Over coffee. Half hour. One-on-one. My treat. You choose the place.

Why? I'm a researcher-turned-life coach, and I'd like to practice my skills listening and asking questions. Topics like bikes and why they're meaningful for you, etc.

You get a coffee and a half-hour with someone who genuinely wants to practice listening and inquiring. I get practice, a ride to a new (hopefully nice) coffee spot, and some interesting company. Please message me privately and we can find a time/place. I'll include a profile link so you know I'm a real person.

And if you're curious about the bar, you can check it out here
Bit tangential, but curious to learn your take on where you find meaningful conversations?
FWIW I have a business meeting with a psychiatrist next week but he's laid back and we sometimes talk shop. He's recommended some good books in the past.

I'm not sure if he's into commenting on a crap fest some acquaintances are going through. I've stepped back out of mud slinging range.

If anyone is interested in writing a novel with the complexity of Agatha Christie and legal angles of John Grisham check with me later. The plot will include conspiracy to commit murder, gambling, fraud, wills, several variations of mental health issues, psychopaths, money, greed, a strange marriage, lots of money, guardianship, people on their death beds, con artists, dead beats, control freaks, not-at-arms-length transactions, conflict of interest, probably more.

To the meaningful conversation bit, the conversation has to be between people open to seeing the other side's positions.

Sometimes a conversation makes you feel better because you find out that there are others far worse off. It's a bit sick but think about living in Syria, Russia, Ukraine, Africa etc.

What's wrong with Africa, it's not all full with Ebola you know?
Plus they have lots of new cars for cheap.
