Whatever you do, don't put them in any of those parking lot "charity" bins/boxes. They all end up shredded and sold as rags at a huge markup.

That's just the natural "evolution" of a shirt.
A new shirt that you wear out to dinner becomes an every day shirt to wear around the house which becomes a shirt to wear around the cottage which becomes a shirt to do house projects in which becomes a shirt to do cottage projects in which become a shirt to do garage projects in which finally become the garage rag....
Am I missing any stage(s) of the shirt evolution?
Your shirts still have lots of life left in them.
My kids make fun of me when I wear shirts/pants around the house from 20 years ago..... Some even have free venting ports.... Still to new to make it into the garage.

Some of my house clothes are items I used to wear back in 10th grade.
Stretched like hell and lost all hope of ever recovering...but you best believe its some of the most comfortable clothing items I own to this day
My favorite shorts that I've had since 2003 finally packed it in this summer. I've patched them a few times but the fabric had become impossibly soft, thin and fragile and the holes were too big to patch.
shirts are one thing. I’ve had multiple sets of ridiculously comfortable sweat pants I’m 100% sure my wife tossed when I wasn’t looking.

We’ve got a woman Jill, from Urban Christian Outreach, who visits the homeless in Ottawa, that we donate to for street clothes, especially warm ones for the winter, otherwise, we’ve donated to Mathew House (refugees), or Dress for success (for job interviews) here. There’s probably similar in Toronto.

Bag of Rags at the paint store ? That’s also your old shirts . Premium prices for all white .
The Scmatte trade ( Yiddish for rag trade) is a centuries old business and it’s very profitable. Take scraps from upholstery and clothing companies , separate them out and sell them back as rags . They have special saws that slice them up , brass zippers in one pile , metals buttons in another , plastic buttons as recycling pellets . It all sells .

My spouse was pushing me to purge out my closet of all, as she described them, the old worn things and things I don't wear.
She said she'd do a first pass and pile up everything she thought I should get rid of on the bed so I could take a look at everything before they got tossed, sent to my priceless rag collection or sent to charity.
An hour later I get called in and see 80% of my clothes piled up on the bed and a mostly empty closet................ We "settled" on something in between, but it was a very traumatic experience.
Be aware that some charity shops are for profit, including Value Village.
Our favourite is GBF in Grimsby and a bit out of the way for GTA dwellers. Restore / Habitat for Humanity is also getting into clothing. I like the home building aspect of the organization but don't know it's workings
