Close call, Got me thinking.............

yesterday afternoon at the 427/highway 27 branch off friend and i were cut off because of a driver not looking, friend was infront of me and we were in the correct tire track when the same car then tried to share a lane by coming up becide (lane splitting car style, car in 2 lanes)-passed but in the process caused us to get pushed onto the shoulder (no where else for us to go, cars all around and not enough space to go in another lane) we didnt get hit but close call and i saw this and got me thinking..........

Instead of telling someone who rides a motorcycle how dangerous it is ... Look twice before switching lanes, making turns, or pulling out of a driveway ... Stay on your side of the road, especially in corners ... Don't follow too closely ... Keep your eyes on the road and off your cell phones ... If you care about someone who rides a motorcycle let them ride and it's not always there fault if something happens.

The problem with posts like this is that you are preaching to the converted. Cagers don't join GTAM.
Too many self centred people people fixated on getting somewhere.

That'll never work. People are far too selfish to look out for anyone but #1. Sorry.

well... you're absolutely right. its not always your fault, in fact, i would be willing to bet that the majority of the time its not your fault when something happens. however, in the end its yourself you're looking out for, i dont care who's fault it is, i just dont want to be pancaked under a truck. so you can preach to others to look out for you, i'll still continue to look out for myself.

also, your tactic is well at work, signs on highways often say "leave space for motorcycles" "check blind spots for motorcycles". but the fact is motorcycles are small, they're hard to see in comparison to a car, especially with a half assed blind spot check. i get cut off all the time, its usually larger vehicles changing lanes, i accelerate or decelerate to accommodate them.

bottom line, motorcycling IS dangerous, and if you want to be safe YOU have to look out for yourself, nobody else will.

pocket full of old bolts. just saiyan.

Do any of you pseudo-thugs stop to think of where all these old bolts/ballbearings/sparkplugs etc etc end up ? Isnt there enough crap on the road to worry about?

Great idea though (sarcasm)

Exactly. Throw ice cubes - NO EVIDENCE.

Memorize the license plate. Report it to police. Various areas also have programmes like Road Watch, that you can use to report such drivers. Odds are that someone, who pulled a move like that on you, makes a habit of it. If his license plate starts being reported then something might be done, even if it's only a phone call.

Get a helmet cam, or even a dummy cam.
It's amazing how much more respect you get if it's obvious they're being recorded.

Got cut off by some woman on a cell phone - had to hit the brakes hard or she would have ran me over (no, I wasn't in her blind spot to begin with - swerved over 2 lanes of traffic into the turn lane (which I was in). Came to a stop at the end of the ramp, pulled up beside her (she was on a cell phone) and gave her a "WTF?!? OPEN YOUR EYES" sign - she gave me the finger... then I pointed out my helmet cam, at which point it promptly changed to "sorry sorry sorry!!!".

Sure, it wouldn't have saved me from being run over, but now she may look a little more and potentially avoid a collision before arbitrarily swerving across lanes...

It's not just about seeing... some people are just jerks!

Last week riding to work I was on the left lane going north on Bay (commute to work)... A taxi passes me on the left side (with half the taxi crossing the yellow barrier) and then cuts in front of me! I pull up to the taxi and tap on his passenger side window... it must have spooked him because he took off on a red. He had passengers too.

This is true. Quite frequently, when someone is doing something selfish or dangerous on the roads, they will patently refuse to look at you. I've lost count of the number of times that someone has started to merge into my lane, on a ramp where their lane ends, and has refused to look at me. Come on now; you hear my horn and I'm looking right at you!

The problem with your idea is most people only see the bad. Start a thread on a non bike board asking people to see bikes and you'll see rants about speeding bikes, lane splitters, obnoxiously loud exhausts & wheelies on the highway.

As you already know, no one notices the guy cruising along "behaving".

Welcome to the world of motorcycling, this is the norm and happens daily. Yes they are in the wrong, but end of the day, your the one eating pavement. Stay alert, ride defensively.

That's a pet peeve of mine. I plan to get a stebel airhorn soon as I for d-bags like this.

^ Useless ... I almost went down by hitting the curb on a road going 30 kmh because this woman driving a buick suv decided to make a right turn on a red light and straight into the left lane while i was crossing an intersection, forcing me straight off to the curb... So next traffic light I tell her to roll down the window so I can tell her that a fender bender for her may mean my life and she completely blanks me... The light after I get off my bike and go to talk to her, knock on her window and tell her to roll the fuсkin' window down (and that's the only F-bomb I dropped) and all of a sudden this 100 lbs indian dude from 5 cars back jumps out of the car to defend the woman (who was also indian)... I guess he thought I'll go violent or sth... and he's like, watch your language, and if you don't like what she did, call the police. I felt like scrubbing the asphalt with him, but whatever... I call the police with her license plate number, the cop almost laughed at me as apparently "stuff like that happens thousand times every day, and what I want him to do about it"... I just hope I scared the life out of that woman and tomorrow she'll hopefully look twice before changing lanes. Point is, police is useless... No accident and police is busy eating donuts. You have to get hurt before they wake up and do something.

What you accomplished, by doing that, was convincing a couple of drivers that all motorcyclists are insane, dangerous jerks. Nothing else.

The reality is this DOES happen every day countless times. You would need a whole special unit to just keep up with the traffic problems.

Its part of riding, has always been that way and will always be that way. Raging on people, no matter how right you are just make them think your a nut job, scared of you, but not thinking at all about their driving. If I were to stop and try and talk to everyone who cut me off, or almost introduced to me to the pavement, I would never get anywhere. Bad drivers are everywhere, you are not as visible, its the reality of the situation.

I make it a habit to try not to ride beside a car, if I must I'll try to stay by driver side window. I feel a lot safer using this method, even if they do suddenly change lanes I'll most Likley be ahead behind or kicking there driverside window lol
