Cheep battery vs. a good one

Mind if I ask what size battery you got from Costco? I struggled to find one that fit.

Energizer ETX12 Powersport Battery

The previous one from Walmart was an Everstart ES14BS. Prices have gone way up since I bought the 14.

I've had great luck with the AJC batteries from "Battery Clerk". I haven't charged the battery for two years, even when leaving the bike out over the winter.

Actually sorry, the only time I had to throw it on a charger was when I left a parking light on overnight. Doh!
Same, surprised so far with AJC from Battery Clerk. Paid 50 bucks for a Yuasa YTZ14S Powersports Replacement. The original OEM Yuasa is 262.00 on FortNine. AJC ran well last year and has been charging well over the winter. Interested to see if I can get another season or 2 out of it. The original OEM battery lasted 2 yrs, very disappointing for the cost.

That's the complete opposite experience I had with my Shorai LFX14L2-BS12 in my 998, which is what they recommended back in 2011. It could barely start my bike cold (under 10c), and only after 5 or 6 attempts. I was always worried it wouldn't start at all, and the kickback from some of the failed starts eventually killed my starter sprag. Now I see they recommend the LFX18A1-BS12 for the same bike.

That's quite unusual. The BS14 is a heftier model with 270 CCA and 18Ah, vs the BS12 with 210 CCA and 14 Ah, but the 12 should have had more than enough capacity?

Which model Shorai are you using, and is it the one they recommend, or did you upsize?

I totally lied.

I just checked and they're not Shorais. They're a brand called Skyrich, the model is HJTZ5S-FP-C and it's a 120 CCA. Equivalent lead acid capacity is 4 Ah. Came stock with the bike.

Previous year models came with the Yuasa YTX5L-BS which is only 80 CCA at 4.2 Ah. Both models provide more than enough power for a 500cc thumper.

From what I'm reading online, the Skyrich brand seem pretty reputable. Got a special Li-ion charger for it. Third season now without a problem.

A cheap battery is like a cheap condom , it’s going to fail when you need it most .

You can buy the most expensive battery you can find, but if you let it discharge to empty often enough, it will fail faster than the cheapest battery on the marketplace.

Maintenance is the key to battery life. Brand and price are secondary.
