Cheap GPS device @ Canadian Tire, may be great for warm weather rides.

+ 1.....help!?

Just follow the instructions from here to unlock it. My question is what to do after it's unlocked. How to install better/extra software/maps and from where? I'd love to see Garmin maps on it...

Down the three files, unzip them and copy them to a SD Card, plug in and run, you might have to delete the files inside the speedcam folder first, but try it without first.

I'm right on it, thanks! Will report how it went.

So far so good. iGO8 runs like a dream and Kate is music to my ears, thanks a bunch masalma!

The only quirk I noticed so far is the sound that's too loud. I'll try again to adjust it tomorrow.

Not a problem Vlad, glad to help.

Vlad, there's also a volume increase mod. Just go to the same link that Nas gave us and download it.

Cool, thanks. The more I know and play with this device the more I like it. I think I'm going to have to work on a hardware mod to make it waterproof

I have yet to install the firmware.. The biggest obstacle is turning on a machine running Windoze. Using it just makes me feel dirty all over.

Hey guys, is this the mapping type of GPS?

No. If you want a mapping GPS, the best most consumers would get would be a 60CSX or 70CSX (the CSX part is important since it implies a high sensitivity receiver, barometric altimeter and external antenna connectivity). If you want even greater accuracy, you'd have to shell out a good chunk of change for a true dgps setup and the post-processing part would be a *****.
This Curtis unit will keep you on the right road, but you can't get good data out of it. The hardware needs to be beefier and the UI isn't very convenient for proper mapping.

thanks for the info

NP stevie. While I don't know much about car gps units or how to mess with'em (yet ), in my line of work I get to use a lot of GPS data and even collect it in the field from time to time (even though I usually leave that up to the crews). The skillset that I'd really like to acquire is proper dgps surveying, but that costs a good chunk of change and the dgps data that we get usually comes from subcotractors hired by the clients, so there's a certain degree of separation.
60CSX and 76CSX will be about as good as you can get without investing a lot of money into a base+rover setup and the huge time investment for postprocessing the data.

i think vlads issue was the volume was TOO loud
Ooops.. Maybe he installed the mod before testing the unit first. However, unless the unit is crackling, the volume cannot be too loud for me ;)

Did anyone get the voice prompts to work on the iGo system?

I downloaded and over-wrote the files included with Kate, and then selected her voice when asked to do so, but it only beeped at me and didn't talk - at least in route simulations.

You have to copy the tts folder and overwrite existing files then reinstall it again.
