Just picked up a bike last week. Has about 13000 clicks on it.

Chain was rusty:

Cleaned it with kerosene and it now looks like this:

Does it need to be replaced?

Are any of the links kinked as they come off the sprocket? Pull back on the chain at the link farthest back on the rear sprocket. If you can see half of the tooth,it's done.

Move the links. If it binds it may be time to replace. Also check your sprockets. If they look like saw blades they're toast. Do all 3 at once or you'll ruin whatever u replace.

yes it is done. replace as a set.

If the links do not move freely or the chain is beyond its stretch limits its done. If the teeth on the sprockets look like hooks they are done. Replace both as a set. Some surface rust on the side plates does not mean the chain is dead.

Check chain slack at multiple points (spin the wheel a bit). If the distance between top and bottom vary greatly than you have a bunch of tight/loose spots and the chain def needs replacing or its gonna skip/make a whacking noise soon enough

Rust on the chain like that is never good though but doesn't mean it's not safe to ride for a bit longer. Check the tightness and sprocket condition. I Can't see very well but it looks like your rear sprocket teeth are pretty rounded

Here's the formal way of doing it. The manual should state the length per X amount of link. Measure that, if it exceeds it is stretched & no good.

If there is aggressive piting from the rust, no good

Exterior rust is not a big deal.. O-ring chains are sealed.. The sprocket teeth don't look rounded either in the pic. In my layman opinion I think both the chain and sprockets are fine.

N.B. He said it has 13,000 km not 130,000.

This is it exactly! If it is passes these tests it is likely good to go.

Looks like the original OEM chain and sprocket on a 2003-2004 ZX6R, that alone would lead me to believe its done...Its very rare for me to see anyone actually take care of their 10 year old chain and sprocket enough for them to last 10 years...So going by the track record with bikes that old, Im sure it can use a new set of sprockets and a chain....The rust also proves the point they are not cleaning and lubing it regularly, so I would assume the same lack of attention was payed to slack adjustment

Thank you everyone for all the replies.

The chain doesn't seem to have any seized links.

Here is a pic of the sprockets:

Johnny, you nailed it. It is an 04 Kawi.

Now to find a mechanic in the Scarborough/ Pickering area. I know there are 109 cycle and GP bikes but wondering if there are any folks here that I could use. Any recommendations?

They mean a clearer sprocket shot from the side. They want to see if the teeth are scalloped, not the tips.

I feel that you should not waste your money replacing a chain and sprocket set that only has 13,000 km on it. 2 sprockets plus chain plus tax will probably bring you to $100. Then there is labour for installation of all 3, lets say 1 hour. So another $100, now you have spent $200.

And for what? Because the exterior had some cosmetic rust? Which you cleaned fine with kerosene?

You should be able to get at least 25,000 km minimum before you have to replace your sprockets. It's not made out of butter. Ride that bike.

I know you said east end, but if you can make the trip to Mississauga you should take it to Johnnyp636. He probably knows these bikes better than Kawi themselves.

Where are you getting a chain/sprocket set for a 600ss for $100? My last chain alone was $180 plus taxes.

Nowhere. I was trying to not make the price too high. Looks like it was too low. But you help make my case. I am not convinced he needs to spend $180 on a new chain that only has 13,000 km on it. It is not cosmetically perfect but rust spots are to be expected on any ferrous material..

The standard I am applying is "is it safe to ride on the street reliably". I believe it is. It is definitely not cosmetically perfect, but should that matter?
