Cert. - Advice Needed

Bought a 2002 CBR600F4i that was certified May 3rd in Midland. The front brakes have been giving me a problem so I finally took it in today. Shop told me the rotors are warped, the windshield is blacked out, the pads may need to the replaced, and there is fork oil on the actual forks. Obviously it shouldn't have been safetied.

It's my first bike, and I can tell you right now that there is no way I rode it hard enough to do any damage. So what should I do? To fix all of that it's going to be $800 - no way I'm paying for it when the bike shouldn't have been safetied in the first place.

Any advice? I still have a couple days to go before the safety expires.

Thanks - be easy on the newcomer :)

Take it to a different mechanic for another estimate? Check with Ken (Kneedragger88) or any other mechanic on the forum?

It's not the money I'm worried about, it's the fact that it should not have been safetied in the first place. The windshield is blacked out, and the front rotors are warped. Anything I can do about that?

The windshield is a non issue as it is just decoration if the seller removed it before the safety it would be a pass.

The forks may have started leaking after you bought it.
The rotors may have warped after you bought it.

This is what you will be told and are out of luck, once you took possesion it became your problem.

I bet rosey toes safetied it

He certainly would have.. :) Safety's are a funny thing..half the people want the mechanic to safety ANYTHING so they can plate it, half want a thorough ten thousand point check..ya can't win. You can report the mechanic who did the safety but I doubt anything is going to happen since you've been riding it for a while, and I seriously doubt they'll pay for the repair.

Does it say anything like the brakes need to be serviced soon in the comments section of the safety certificate?

It says "...brakes,....are good to go/road safe".

I had a feeling I'd be on the hook for this. I left a message for the mechanic, so we'll see what happens. It's a lot of money to invest in a bike that I thought would be roadworthy. A crack in the fairing or a scratch on the paint is okay, but when you safety a bike with shoddy brakes, to me, thats not right. I guess thats the price of being ignorant and thinking all people do their job...live and learn I guess.

A safety isnt a warranty, like said day of the inspection it was good, they could have cleaned the forks etc and nothing was visable then well the mechanic cant see it leaking

I'm not saying it is a warranty. But the brakes were a problem from the start, and the safety says a test ride was done. There's no way you couldn't feel the issue if you took it for a ride. I'm just a peeved because with taking the bike to a couple shops, all of them pointed out issues that would invalidate the safety. Partially my fault for not doing my due diligence I guess.

well if they did ride it like they should have they should have felt it. But you have to understand you can take a bike or car to 10 different places and every shop is going to give you a different list of problems. In your cause as ****** as it sounds they probably didnt even check the bike out

Just because a vehicle passes a safety inspection, doesn't mean it's safe. The safety regulations are extremely vague and for the most part are up to the discretion of the mechanic.

As it pertains to your braking situation, the regulations dictate; "All mechanical components of the service and parking brake systems that are external to the wheel shall have no mechanical part misaligned, insecure, excessively worn, broken, binding, seized, missing, frayed or disconnected." (http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/regs/english/elaws_regs_900611_e.htm#BK12). Unless there is literally 0 percent brake pad left, I think the mechanic is in the clear.

The safety regulations are just a very basic guideline to get a vehicle on the road, they in no way guarantee the condition of the vehicle. As always, buyer beware. If you don't know anything about bikes, you should have had it inspected by someone who does.

If it makes you feel any better, I think everyone makes one of these mistakes. Hell, both my first bike and first car were absolute lemons. I learned from each experience though and haven't made the mistake since.

YOU should've looked at the bike better.

"The front brakes have been giving me a problem so I finally took it in today"--> what kind of problem?

"Shop told me the rotors are warped" --> How did they determine that, how much are they off by?

the windshield is blacked out --> Are you really tucking and looking out of the windshield?...did you not see this when you looked at the bike prior to purchase?

|"the pads may need to the replaced"--> May? its either a yes or a no, are they down to the wear mark or not?

"and there is fork oil on the actual forks"--> How much Oil? pics? Yes there could be some oil on the forks....there is a oil seal/dust sheild on them....but all depends on how much oil is getting out to see if that's an issue or not...

"Obviously it shouldn't have been safetied." -> says who?

Since he feels the first mechanic should have felt the warped rotors, they must have been vibrating since he got it, that was when he should spoke up. Sounds like he simply did not mind the vibration, and now does not like it.

added to that fact.....I think he is taking it to a second mechanic?.....

One of my biggest pet peeves....opinions vary from shop to shop, which doesnt mean that shop A is right and shop B is wrong either...so ppl shouldn't hate...
