CBC: What a mess

The thing that really annoys me about the CBC is that they get government funding, and they are allowed to sell advertising. Not many state funded broadcasters can do both. Take the BBC for example

Part of our company provides products for the TV/OTT Ad Insertion business. TV advertising in Canada generally costs between $6-9 per thousand views for prime time programming. I read a statement from the CBC - I'll try to find it - where they complained that they lost $175 million in as revenue when Rogers got the rights to Hockey. And that was only one program, so anything they get from the public trough is probably just a nice little bonus.

They also get a share of your cable or satellite bill. I think that Rogers and Bell have to pony up something like $1.50 per subscriber for CBC News World and you have to take it as its on the basic tier
Just another half dozen reasons why they should cease to exist. There is no need for a tax payer funded mandatory news organization (unless you are cynical and think that the support it provides a particular party is viewed as a good return on investment).

They also do a bunch of other stuff that is somewhat unethical. The Nature of Things is probably considered to be quintessential Canadian science programming and content. Its actually not. A lot of of it comes from PBS Nova and the BBC and they just have David Suzuki re-record the commentary to bump up their 30% Canadian Content threshold. Any that are made in Canada are generally made by small independent production companies like Nomad. Its sort of fraudulent in a way, passing someone elses work off as your own

We also used to sell them encoding gear years ago. Now they only deal pretty much with non-Canadian suppliers like Harmonic and Ateme. There are still great little Canadian companies still around. Why would you not support them? When we did work with them a meeting meant lunch and drinks at Harbour 60 and they paid. Sales Engineers were lining up to go :) In comparison, NBC were all about grabbing a sandwich and coffee that you had to pay for yourself and bringing them back to the meeting room :(

Well I guess CBC gets no love around here. From what I have seen you all post, seems rightly so. I got into a convo with someone about this on Facebook a while back. Their response was CBC provides service to remote areas were for profit companies do not want to operate because the market is too small. Makes some sense. I think way back in the beginning this was how CBC was created to actually serve these communities, but today, it seems totally different. Not sure what to make of it. I do like the idea that we are all connected nationwide and at least most communities have service. But not liking the idea that the content is questionable, or manipulated by gov in someway to suit political agenda's.

CBC is VAST, its like bashing honda because you dont like their snowblowers...they also make cars, motorcycles, airplanes, etc etc etc
I dislike their television news reporting(its fairly repetitive and uninforming), but often times find their online articles and news coverage very informative, covering important things that nobody does or before anyone else does(simply because of their size, resources and reach)

I also like some of their entertainment content (cbc gem streaming service, kims convenience, etc)

I think of defunding CBC in a similar vein to defunding police. Some parts of what they do are necessary, much of what they do is better addressed by others. Move the money out of the dumb parts and reassign to something more useful and/or cost-effective.

There is a big push at the moment to defund the BBC. They would be righteously screwed as they don't have a fall back for the primary TV and Radio channels

That’s CBC radio these days, their TV stations are all major metros. They don’t need them.

I think their time has passed. I’m ok with a skinnier version that operates like TVO or PBS.
