Caught at Customs

I believe that would only happen if the item was improperly declared. I ordered a toy machine gun from the US that was seized by CBSA. It was properly declared, but the CBSA deemed it to be a "replica" and therefore prohibited because it said "replica" on the box. It was about 1/4 the size of a real M16.

Anyway, none of my shipments are ever held up in customs, except for one, which was put in the dangerous goods section in error. It was a chess set - LOL!

That's a good way to get stuff you need deem it to be a dangerous item.

Lession is, don't bs at a boarder crossing. Tell the truth and it likely will go smoothly. There are exceptions but, in general they don't go through the hassle for a couple of purses worth a couple of hunderd bucks retail.

I wouldn't sweat it too badly. Next time, have the receipts handy with your ID. Should be fine.

I've declaired nearly a thousand bucks in kids clothing (baby and two girls back to school). Had the receipts nice and neat and handed them in with our pass ports. Was asked total value of goods and what was purchased. And if we had anything else to declare such as alcohol or tobacco. $900 and change of kids clothes, no booze or tobacco. Welcome home. Don't think they even looked at the receipts other to see if the total was close to what I stated and the receipts were for clothes and dated for the day of crossing.

btw if you're there for a like a week or two aren't you allowed to bring over $700 worth or more over tax free?

Get caught lying to them, you'll have an enjoyable experience every time you return to Canada from that point on.

Even when they get it wrong and it gets cleared up later you still get flagged. They are fast to add things to their system and almost never correct their errors.

My brother after living in the states for 5 years (USMC 5 year tour) was moving back to Canada and the customs guys wanted him to pay import tax on his Canadian bought truck coming back into Canada. You would think with all their information access they could have solved it there but it went on for a while to correct the issue. He still gets flagged everytime he uses his Canadian passport as opposed to his American passport.
