Carrying a laptop on a bike

Was it ever useful? That was a bleeping terrible product idea.

Useful when it came out especially since it came out with MS office apps that I used at the time. It actually has surprisingly good build quality and I liked the keyboard accessory that I bought along with it.

Last time I used it was for Netflix 3 yrs ago when I had to go on a business trip. For internet browsing you need tremendous amount of patience.

I've also loaded up a pdf of service manual and used it a few times but I found it annoying to have to take off work gloves, wash hands, and scroll so I stopped using it that way. But thats an issue with all tablets/laptops.

Yup same as what has been said. I just pack a duffle bag and stuff the laptop (13") and ipad mini between clothes. So far so good.

I use to travel with a 15" laptop, but when I got the 13" the difference in weight was noticeable, and appreciated.

Shouldn't be any real difference in reliability between a laptop with SSD and an iPad.

I carry a laptop, in a simple sleeve, in my top case on every single trip and most days when I'm commuting. Glass on an old 15" Macbook shattered a good number of years ago, don't think it was caused by the bike, I can only assume there was something between the screen and keyboard. Apple fixed it under warranty anyways.

Unsolicited advice, I absolutely adore my 12" Macbook for travel. It's unbelievably light and compact without being tiny. Not significantly lighter than my current gen 13" Macbook on paper, but it feels half the weight in your hand. It's an absolute joy to travel with and they can be found semi-cheap. I think I picked mine up a couple years old, specced well, for around $600.

If you do carry it on the bike in panniers for example, don't put it near the exhaust side, couple of cases of where the heat makes panniers an oven and cooks electronics
