Caribana is getting a new name

Caribana has a serious image problem for the last 20 years or more. It's not just the violence, there's been mismanagement, missing funds, corruption, questionable committee practices among other things. It's got plenty of other problems besides the shootings.

+1...... exactly. I'm sure most people are there for good times...just too many up to no good.
Close your eyes and pretend it doesn't happen if that's your thing.

Ok so what you are saying is... because there was a shooting at a Caribana that makes it ghetto? What about all those people that work so hard all year long on their costumes. What about all the families that go to celebrate where they came from??? I'm not even black and I'm offended by the turn of this thread.

Shame on you people and shame on the mods for allowing this ****.

I've always wanted to go. Perhaps I'll organize a group to go?

My point is I, like many thousands of Torontonians, will avoid the Lakeshore during Caribana. But few will openly admit to it.

Montreal, on the other hand, has a Caribana-type event that I've been to and enjoyed.

Well to each their own. I gotta admit the traffic it creates is insane. But I still wanna go.

In terms of Montreal.... well they just know how to party better. THE BEST CANADA DAY EVER!!!!

no matter what they change it too, its always gonna b known as caribana!

true, but the confusion will come when all the official advertising, and media call it something else.

I think in the end, it'll still be called Caribana. Money talks. Someone will pay to use the name.

WTF kind of a petty power struggle is that! As if the name is worth anything outside it's association with this festival. It's like the founders aren't actually interested in the success of the festival, they just want to control it. People are nuts.

Yes it really does feel like a "I'm taking my ball and going home" kind of situation. Very petty and the people of Toronto deserve better.

With the crowd it attracts, no wonder people think it's ghetto. It's "cool" to act ghetto/thug and listen to soca these days... I'm willing to bet that over 80% of the tourists are just there to "front" and "holla at the ******* rather than relax and learn about the culture.

^^^ This

Over the years the crowd it has attracted (many from the states) have lost sight of what the festival stands for and what it is to celebrate and just cruise the streets in blinged out SUV's and holler at girls and act thugish.

I love watching the parade, costumes and music but stay away from most events because of the clientel it has started to attract.

The name Caribana is trademarked by the group that founded the festival but no longer runs the event.

So because they got lazy and gave up running the events, they feel it shouldn't be called Caribana anymore even though the festival has the same purpose in mind?
If anything they should be proud that their name has gone on to be a really huge successful festival!
Gawd, I friggin hate the people in this world sometimes...acting like a bunch of 3 year olds.

I think the last time there was a shooting at Caribana was like 10 years ago... and every year there is always some post on here that says there's shootings and a whole bunch of other chit.

If you go down to have a good time you will, ppl just wanna grind and try some food. The amount of cops that's out and about the entire weekend is very reassuring. As for traffic and the other bullchit that being complained about its not any worst that the INDY or just summer construction.

Relax and tak a wine.

Cat I'll go with you.

I went to the steel pan competition last year for the first time and I thought it was awesome!

So, has it got a name yet?

Why does Caribana get a bad rap...?

You wanna go and avoid the crowds? Bring a big dog. I went a few years ago with one of my bullmastiffs and the crowd parted 20 feet wide for me everywhere I went. People from the Caribbean are super scared of dogs especially big ones..Pretty funny to clear a path like that in huge crowd.

Yeah thats so true. Back in high school days, an extra large rottweiler spared me from getting jumped by a few dudes who tried to set up a friend and I to rob us. They thought it would be 2 guys but we caught on to what was going on and showed up with 4 guys plus a big dog... So glad we had that dog with us.

If you go to caribana during the day, there will be a good family vibe. At night though, there are plenty sketchy american dudes that come up for trouble and harass the ladies.
