Just want to hear if other folks change careers in full gallop (later in life).I'm very near retirement and very sick of 3 shifts and the stress that comes with my job.Printing press operator.Maybe Walmart could use a greeter,Lol.

I dunno Ric.. I have been contemplating working on a excursion boat in Cancun, or Maalaea . They take tourist out to snorkel and whale watch etc.. very large Catamarans . the food and drink is included.. and they have offered accomadation too.. 10mth of the year. that will leave me time to head back to Canada, freeload with the kids. .. I mean what could be the downside to that!

Target is opening dozens of stores in the next little while, 4800 Mcjobs to be filled.
If you're near to retirement then it's time to start your own business!

My brother prints too, and from everything he says its a cake job. Why not wait it out till your (close) retirement then start a lil business?

I've thought about it..ski bum..mtb/ski tech..doctor (seriously..)..but it's tough. When you make good money, it's hard to throw it away to start again. Maybe in 15 years. However, I encourage everyone to follow their dreams.

All jobs come with stress, the stress of "I'll get the evil eye if we don't produce 600 widgets this shift" and "i leveraged $250,000 against my house to launch this project" are very different, and folks handle it differently.

I've changed careers completely 7 times, autobody, structural steel welding , heavy press operator in manufacturing, purchaser/ contractor sales in a lumberyard, industrial technical coatings sales, industrial wood products distributor (current)

On the side I took commercial photography at college, teach sailing and consult for power tool and machinery importers. I may start a company in the next 12 months, working on logistics and properties right now.

Its pretty easy to switch gears, network/network/network. I been truly fortunate. I also have the backstop of a very gainfully employed spouse.

15 years in the Army, followed by 13 years Millwright and the last 3 years as a trucker, with brief episodes as a Security Guard, Financial Advisor and a Gearing Up Instructor in between.

Don't be afraid to bounce around a bit till you find something you like doing.

Just changed careers and became my own boss :D

3rd career change in 7 years. 2 more to come within the next 5 years.

If you want a job for min wage and don't mind coming to richmond hill I'll hire you fo sho.

I grew up being told that math is key to a good life, and any job bellow an engineer(excluding civil) is a failure. What a load of crap.

I'd love to do something that has to do with mountains. Ski patrol, ranger, or field research would really suit me. Right now in sticking to my apprenticeship, but as soon as I am done i'm headed to BC where I will pursue something that truly suits me.

invictus43 you moved to BC right?

Ric, I was in a certain motorcycle store awhile ago, and they said they've been trying to get you to work for them for a long time now! :)
I turned that job down back in june while i was fighting with my present employer.I was trying to get a "package" out of them (23 years) They have since hired someone.Boooooo!

edit: how long ago did you talk to them?

That's what I was thinking...the motorcycle shop down the street from us.

btw my dad is in the same position as you. He's a machine operator and he wants out. I told him to try and get a package by summer, otherwise quit. Sometimes the end stretch is the hardest.

Hang in there until the right 'package' is available, or your seniority allows you to leave Ric. I retired (early) 17 yrs ago this month, and there's still never enough time in the day.
For instance - I couldn't leave for the bike show until 3:30 this afternoon, and I'm usually one of the first persons through the gate at 10am.
Our plane leaves for Vegas early Sunday morning.
Vancouver Island for a week or two next month. So much to do, so little time.
Forget that Wal-Mart greeting ****, and enjoy YOUR time.

I'll be 59 the end of next month.I have no intention of working fulltime past 60.

The company does not have the money for any packages.I would be surprised if it is even in business in 5 years.

I work at Beresford Box.Folding carton company.I've been in the folding carton industry for 37 years with BB for 23 of those. It would be really great to find a job that pays about $20/hr doing something that i liked.I won't go into details, but i'm not the only one that the company would like to get rid of.There are several of us long term employees that are constantly under a lot of pressure. The stress level is huge and everyone deals with it in their own way.The place has had a big problem with substance abuse in the past.Oh man,the stories i could tell!
