Car Tire Recommendations

I run Michelin X-Ice Snow on steelie rims/no sensors, for about six months here in Ottawa on the Odyssey.
They're fricken expensive and don't last long, but have really good grip in the nasty winters. 40,000 warranty vs 70,000 for the All Season Michelins.
For summer tires, I switched it up and got a set of Bridgestone Driveguards from Costco, 60,000 miles warranty.
They've been better than expected.
I ran All Weather tires, can't remember the name (edit: Nokian), on the Chevy Venture for a few months, and to be honest I would have been better off just buying Winter tires, as they didn't last any longer, and didn't hold up in the ice/snow.

I cant complain about my last set of xice. Bought new in ~2012. Retired them this spring. I could probably have used them as summer tires this year but one got wounded and it wasnt worth fixing.

Bridgestone

as much as I love my Michelins, Had Blizzak snows on my SUV for the past at least 5 seasons if not more. the final season they got increasingly loud, but darn did they still grip despite being so old in tire years, and with a good amount of mileage on them.

I was so impressed I ordered another set ready to go for this winter!

for all weather, we put some Nokians on our fleet vehicles, and one set of Michelin cross climates. so far all pretty good. definitely a marked improvement over all season tires in the wintry stuff

Wife has blizzaks on her SUV. They're fine. I prefer the x-ice but they are on very different vehicles so it's not the best comparison. Also, Bridgestone has a huge marketing fail and has many different "blizzaks" that are substantially different (LM-32, DM-32, LM001, LT etc. all with different tread pattern and construction).

Still cant run these in southern ontario. No good reason why.

Lots of good reasons. They are noisy, hard on asphalt, and reduce traction on dry or wet roads that have no snowpack or ice.

Studs work best on ice roads and snowpack, we have neither in southern Ontario.

I just retired my Toyo walnut shells, they were great, rolled about 80,000 over 6 seasons. Replaced with Hakkapeliittas this winter, so far they have been excellent.

Give J&D Tire a call @ (905) 876-4788. They are located in Milton.
Tell John or Joe I sent you.
Great guys. Family owned business since 1983.
I know the family as they are my neighbors.

In my experience, the cost of snows is offset by the insurance savings that I get for having them.
Nokian hakkapeliitta's have been my go to winters. Always rated one of, if not the best, year to year.

IIRC, I get a 5% discount for snows. Doesn't cover the costs for me (wouldn't even cover the cost of swapping if I didn't do it myself). Now, kilometers put on snows mean fewer kilometers put on all season tires so I get more years out of them and yearly tire cost isn't grossly affected (if you don't have to pay for changeover and you ignore opportunity costs).

Last year BlackCircles was cheapest for some WS 90 winters. DOT was recent and no issues

Don’t like Costco much. They installed tires wrong my CX5 so there were rows of weights on the one rim. They were so busy they could not resolve the issue promptly but I did get some money back.

I've gotten all my tires from Costco, they swap my winter/summer tires on the rims and install for $56 and they fix any punctures for free. Usually wait till there is a good rebate on the tire brand I'm after to purchase.

Been trying to call COSTCO for 2 days…with zero luck getting through to their tire department just for comparison.

Average is coming in around $1600 tax in for a set of Michelins on the Odyssey.

I do it online, grandpa.

What’s the mileage on your volt now?
I’m at around 80k on mine and starting to think about a new set of summer tires.

I run the Nokian’s as well for winter which are relatively low rolling resistant, so the mileage is decent.

I’m at about 95,000km. Pretty sure the all seasons are the originals. Still may be able to squeeze out another season.

But the odyssey is more for peace of mind with wife and kids driving. Especially in the rain.

Oooof......

New Tires: Michelin Defenders - COSTCO beats everyone by about $200 with install (Thanks for the referral @oioioi but your buddy's price beat Honda by $20)
New Brakes: Front and Rear - $1716 (can shave $800 off if I do the brakes myself - done before)
New Transmission Fluid: $212

$3400 just like that.

Ooof. Brake parts should be less than $900. I normally get them from rockauto as I haven't been able to beat their prices. Shipping sucks (almost as much as the parts price) but they are still the cheapest I have found.
