Car just out of warranty issues....Dammit!

Hey guys,

So of course there's an issue that comes up once a vehicle runs out of warranty (100,000km warranty and car is at 115,000km)....

Wife's 2012 Elantra Touring started acting up again with the transmission....rpm jumps here and there at times, and the shifts are getting progressively harsher and uneven.

Car was bought in 2012, first (auto) transmission was replaced within the first year for similar issue at 17,000km and now this is happening. I didn't buy the Ext Warranty as they wanted something stupid like 2000-3000 for it and now this comes up.

Any recommendations on how to deal with this. Going to the dealer today to check out what they say and if there's any 'good will' but considering I do all my own oil changes, brakes, filters then I don't see much going that route....I had great help here from the GTAM community with my Civic Si issue on the clutch (still works great after the master got replaced under warranty!) so thought I'd ask again.

Any help is highly appreciated, thanks!

Hyundai dealers offer great service for the price. I would talk to them first. Plus any reputable shop should be able to work on it

If it helps at all, look at it this way: It won't likely cost you $3000 to replace an auto transmission, so you've still saved money by not getting the extended warranty! win!

Silly question, but that 100K warranty, does that apply to the car from when it was sold? or when the new transmission went in? If it's 100K on the new tranny, you have a couple thousand km's left, no?

Talk to Hyundai dealer, see what they say. If you don't like the answer, give a call to Hyundai Canada, they're customer support is pretty reasonable and are authorized to offer repairs up to certain amounts. Never hurts to ask, only cost you an hour on the phone.

100k - 115k - that 15% over, that's not 'just out of warranty'.

There should a few of them in scrap yards that got wrecked, get one of those out and put it in. Unless they have a known issues ?

Didn't think about it in terms of 15% but you're right. Wife does a lot of kms so it just seems like it happened 'right' after warranty expired.

The transmission does have known issues, I replaced the first one at 17k or so and now this. I've already started sourcing transmissions from wreckers and am planning on getting one just in case because it's anywhere from 400-600$ so may be worth holding onto. Brand new install is about 2500$ so that's out of the question.

Dealer said that the fluid was practically black so that's what's causing the issue. Replaced the fluid with brand new and so far so good...but still a small 'clunk' when going from reverse to drive...ugh...

That's almost 40k/year, I guess she drives for work ? I didnt think those cars were made to last too long...they are like a Chev. cavalier in my eyes.

I'd keep the fluid clean and flush every 10k and see how long that trans lasts. Perhaps use a trans. treatment?

But! if trans was replaced at 17k under warrenty - should you get 100K after that point though? What did the dealer say about the warrenty ?

I am in a similar boat. Next weekend I am dropping a B5.5 passat TDI transmission. Massive PITA. Anyone familiar with those?

1. Yes it's for her work. That's why I can't have the car die and am looking at just buying a transmission from a damaged car so I have a spare and minimize downtime.

2. Warranty doesn't extend from the 17k repair....it's 100k from original date of purchase

3. Will keep an eye on the fluid. No shift issues the last 3 days but has that clunk b/w drive - reverse at times...which is unfortunately not at all times.

4. Do all my work myself and at a shop so not much business going towards the dealer so may be a tough sell but will call Hyundai tomorrow to see what can be done. I don't expect the dealer to push much for this.

Thanks all.

My buddy gave me that site as well and has put transmissions into VWs over the last few years. Said that once he put a transmission in only to find out it was garbage so had to pull it back out and re-do all the work....said it's a major PITA.

Dunno, my guess is for a new car it's probably there because it was wrecked. On an older one I'd be more weary.

My first transmission went at 17,000km.... :( From what I understand the transmissions in these cars are made of glass. It's the weakest point on the car.

Had the car for 115,000km and the issues were as follows:

Transmission #1 - 17,000km
Steering wheel #1 - 20,000km (leather wearing off)
Steering wheel #2 - 60,000km (leather weather off)
Transmission #2 - 113,000km

Outside of that no issue so it's been a fairly good car. Unfortunately the issue that went is a critical issue.

That sucks. Is it the 6 speed auto? My gf has that in a 2013 and I like it. 40K so far. Wish she got M/T, wish the passat was M/T... wish the whole world used M/T.

Its a data base of wreckers and their inventory. Its a hit and miss but its 10x better going on one site and seeing all the wreckers inventory across North America then to call each individually.

Sent you a PM :)

What's the service interval on those transmissions? 98,000km on that trans so when was the last time it was serviced?

Never serviced. Fluid was inspected around 40k and also at 80k but that's it. No issue was seen then.
