I am posting in some other forums as well, but been a part of GTAM since 2010 and trust some of the feedback from the community

I am at a point in my life where I can afford a few luxuries. I am not looking for the cheapest method to travel, but the most enjoyable as well. Typically whenever I require a car I rent from enterprise at 40 dollars a day. Given I have no car insurance history in canada, the cost of renting a car every weekend is equivalent to just my insurance payments. So it was always the cheapest option.

I am considering a few options of cars within my budget and am curious to know if you have any feedback or suggestions.

  • Budget around 55,000 - 70,000 (cars within this are an 2007 aston vantage, 2008 m3, 2009 gtr (base)
  • Down payment 35,000
  • Financing cost 1,000-1500

I am a kiteboarder, so having enough space for a kiteboard is pretty important (150 cms). The car will be used infrequently, not a commuter but tourer.

Questions:
Warranty on used vehicle? Whats your experience been like with them?
Sales of sports car, depreciation?
dealerrater.ca - im only dealing with the higher rated dealers.

A used car @ 70 grand 50% financed. Yikes!

If you need more advice feel free.

Why are you looking at high performance 2 door coupes for touring and transporting your board? It makes no sense. Its like touring with a SS.

For your budget you can get yourself a 2010 E-63 AMG. More than enough to put a smile on your face performance wise and its more classy and spacious.

Try an STI or EVO... you can spend just about the same as you have for a 'down payment' and get a car that is probably as much fun as the ones you listed...

great cars, but for his budget why would you settle for a Subie or Mitsubishi. Its clear he's looking more for the luxury options.

Why anyone would want to finance a car at 1000-1500 a month is beyond me.

For that 35k downpayment you can get a nice used vehicle with plenty of "luxury" and will be practical at the exact same time.

For example a 2010- 11 Toyota Highlander. Leather seats, sunroof, all the toys, + awd for winter and you can haul anything you want with it.

If you're still at the sports car stage get a used wrx sti, and you're still well under 35k.

Cars are a waste of cash, you use them and they simply lose value.

Buy something reliable thats decent on insurance/gas. This coming from someone who used to be a huge car guy and ****** away more money on cars that i'd ever like to admit.

.

Don't forget to budget for premium gas, sky high insurance and insane repairs/maintenance bills and parts. Good luck and hope you're rich.

A nice M5 or an S6 will meet your needs and put a smile on your face. Or an AMG wagon if you need that much space.

also, tell me how I can get that type of job you have to be able to put that type of cash into a car!

I am still trying to figure out how to strap a kite board or where to put your gear in an Aston.

btw- those used luxury cars tend to have problems that's why ppl got rid of them.
Do some reading.

I do understand what you are trying to achieve hence I did not suggest an SUV to you.

I'd go for M5 or S6 in that budget any day too.

You are saying a 6.2 liter Mercedes vs a 4.3 liter Aston? Again this isnt exactly for performance. I could easily make do with a kia, but do I really just want to "make do"

Essentially I am looking for a 2 door coupe

All cars have had problems, I did read up on the aston forums regarding repairs. But with a warranty, whats the big deal?

Unless you're getting a new car factory warranty, forget about warranty. Third party extended warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on. Best company I've dealt with is First Canadian and I still wouldn't recommend them and they're far from cheap.

Warranty on a 6-7 year old Aston? I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you.....

Do yourself a favour and avoid high end luxury/sports cars on the used market. There's a reason rich people get rid of their expensive cars often and quickly. If you can't afford it new, you probably shouldn't consider buying one used. That's a simple truth.

E60 M5s, for example, are super cheap nowadays. 500hp V10 beast, sounds amazing and goes like stink. Except when the SMG blows up and you realize replacement cost is $12k. You really wanna deal with that, while making $1000/mo payments on the loan? I doubt it.

I'll tell you this much though: if you can find an E60 M5 with a proper 6MT transmission (they're out there, but they command a premium) you'd probably be very happy with it. And it wouldn't cost you $1500/mo. $40k might get you into one.

Good information, thanks for this.

Well with a new vehicle I can pretty much realize the depreciation as soon as I drive it off the lot. So there goes my 12k instantly.

So I take it you suggest getting a cheap used vehicle 10k or less. or new?

No I suggest doing lots of research and buying something reliable. The E60 M5 example is a good one- they're amazing cars, they've tanked in value over the last 2 years, they have incredible performance, but the SMG transmissions are hugely problematic. The 6MT on the other hand is bulletproof. That's the kind of info you need to know when looking at used cars. Astons and Maseratis for example are pretty terrible for reliability and maintenance... there's a reason they're so cheap used.

Research research research. Get on the forums and do some digging. Personally I wouldn't be financing a used car though. So if you have $35k in cash to play with, why not make your budget <$40k? Isn't it just... easier? There are tons of great cars out there for 40.

Keep in mind, cars with high depreciation do so for a reason. The used car market is smart, it knows what the value of something is.

There's a reason you can get a 13 year old Mercedes S class for almost the same price as a 13 year old Accord, even though the former cost three times as much when new.
