Canadian Tire Safety Inspection?

Everyone keeps telling me that Canadian Tire does safeties, but I called 2 locations today and neither of them do it? Does anyone know if its just specific locations that do it or what?

Only if the location has a motorcycle mechanic, so you have to call around to find one.

Thanks, I ended up calling around to a few locations and found one

would not recommend the one on weber near king if your looking in Waterloo, took 2 there, the guy could not even get the bike in the bay without just about dumping it, bunny hopped it a couple times and stalled it. Then to top it off apparently a parking lot joy ride at unnecessary speed appears to be part of their safety test. Funny I didn't see it on the requirement sheet. Unless its a US bike and you need a federal inspection, consider an actual motorcycle place like tri-city

That is really cheap! Which location? Cheapest I've paid at CT is about $60 and most I've been charged is $120ish. One guy that safetied my old bike was a cruiser rider and he was clearly intoxicated. He hopped on my RR and couldn't get it started saying it was F'd. Kickstand was down . Then he went for a joyride around the neighbourhood.

Kawi_girl, if you're hoping to have a proper safety inspection done then take it to a bike shop. If you just want to be quickly and easily passed for the road then CT is good for that as they have no clue what they're doing.

Any mechanic authorized to perform car safety inspections is also legally allowed to perform motorcycle inspections. So any Canadian Tire shop can do it, however they may not want to as they do not feel qualified to do it, which is the right thing to do.

Disclosure, I work for Canadian Tire Head Office

Anybody recently get their bike safetied by CT? If so, which location?

Local CT by my house confirmed they do offer the service, but looking for personal experience, fully understanding that YMMV.

Why not just go to a motorcycle shop?
Probably because mc shops make a living selling accessories like chains, sprockets, tires etc. Canadian Tire doesn't.

You'd have to sell alot of those to make a paycheck, let alone a living. Not much margin in low cost/short labour time repairs.

I understand what you are saying, there are some unscrupulous shops out there but some are decent people that won't suggest unnecessary repairs and are more interested in building a relationship based on trust which will earn long term revenue.

Where are you located? I've had two bike safeties done at the Bolton location, good experience there. The technician actually rode the bike and was honest about what it needed and what could be put off. Last one was last year so not sure if the same guy is there, as you said YMMV.

Yes, there are reputable dealers. But some are not. I know a dealer in Waterloo that failed a safety because the footpeg feelers were worn. Lol

Part of the inspection on a MC requures the mechanic to road test brake systems. if the mechanic does not have a motorcycle license, he may not be able to do the road test. Few mechanics will do safeties if they don't ride

So you take your bike to CTC and they fail it - what's your next step ?
Take it home and fix it yourself or take it to a shop like you could have in the first place ?
If a shop tires to upsell you above and beyond what it really needs then find another shop.
It's the mechanic's and shop's licenses on the line as we've seen from past threads about Rosey Toes.

Yours is a valid point. I have never taken a bike for an inspection without them trying to pressure me into some repairs. I usually inspect the bike myself and do necessary repairs before going there. If they try to pull a fast one I tell them no, you can have my permanent business or you can send me somewhere else. Most of them are reasonable.

This is the motorcycle safety checklist. Your best bet is to go over it yourself so there's no surprises, then take it to a reputable shop for the safety. If you tell them what you've already checked, they're less likely to blatantly rip you off.

EDIT: @Roadghost beat me to my point while I was typing.
