Canadian Harley Dealers closing

A little off here, but check out some of these

:geek: can you name the maker of the bike that is at 1:00 on that video?
The one with license plate CX4158

Tons of U.S. dealers closing too. Also hearing rumors that the new Harley ADV may only be sold in Europe initially. Makes sense, North American Harley owners will only reject it like the other bikes Harley has introduced over the years.

When I had my Sportster I found HD good for service and parts. Honda rarely had them in stock at the dealer but could get them in a few days. Service from Honda had a chippy attitude. I don't see a Harley in my future so the closure is more of a loss of a historic relationship.

I don't know what agreements are in place when a person buys a named dealership, motorcycles or donuts. In retail it takes years to establish a customer base. Even if compensated a new location takes a long time to establish itself.

have no clue, but it's kool
NSU 500 1935 to 1939
it's a travesty to chop that.

This isn’t unprecedented in the auto industry. Us automakers did this 10 years ago and it worked out well for the manufacturers and dealers.

I’d like to see bike dealers join into the automalls and auto strips we see in the car biz.
Yeah but there isn't a Harley-Davidson dealership every 3 blocks in the city, you are comparing apples to oranges.

Apples to oranges? Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion.

Dealerships placement is based on end user distribution, meaning each dealer has an area that they serve based on the business targets. For instance, if you are in Toronto, you may find 1000 HD owners in a 10 mile radius, so you can have dealers 10 miles apart with minimal overlap. In Lindsay, 1000 HD owners might require a 75 mile radius.

Obviously there are far more Chevies than Harleys on the road, hence the closer spacing of dealerships.

How about them apples?

For the record, I own a Dyna Superglide which I love dearly.
I go into the dealership only to order parts and I usually know the specific part # when I walk in. I’m not even interested in anything on the floor anymore.
Rows of $30-$40k motorcycles. They’ve turned themselves into an aspirational brand but there are no young riders who ‘aspire’ to the Harley lifestyle. My 23 yo son comes with me and he says “meh” to the ‘Old man’ bikes he sees on the floor. Him and I laugh about it but we know it’s true. He’s the next generation of riders.
I’m fascinated to see where Harley will go.

Interesting perspective.

If I was a Harley executive, your remark about your sons comment/perspective would scare the heck out of me.

That also goes the other way, I have acquaintances that ride the HD brand , and their sons (and two daughters) would entertain no other brand, its as if no other bikes are even being manufactured, its a family lifestyle.

All things be honest here, i have not put no more than 3000k's on my Electra glide in probably 6yrs. i have such a blast on my KLR or Versys 1000.

as far as it being a great bike i can say yes, it does the long hwy trips very comfortably, cranks up the tunes and go. gets about 350k's to a tank. Never have to think about break downs cause i do keep up on the maintenance although i don't ride it, i still go over the bike with a look every now and then.

wondering if they shut down Browns?

Dilawri group, Canada’s largest auto dealer network. Smart idea by Harley, these folks know how to run car dealerships and are used to having manufacturers drive sales mix and margins.

Harley has stated they want to drive changes where they have better control on product mix thru dealers, this might be part of their new way.

Ask Honda Canada how combining car and powersports dealers worked.
Hint - it didn't.
