Can you low ball a dealership?

Also if you are trading in tell them you are not and get their lowest price, then tell them you actually do want to trade in. If you tell them ahead of time they build it into their quote.

Check what factory to dealer incentives being given out. $2k off the price probably means there was that from the factory.

Update*

So today I went into the dealership to take a look at the car, test drove it. Sat down with one of the salesmen and started talking numbers.

Price listed was $21,995 + taxes and something else which came to $25000 and a bit.

I told him my budget 22,000 all in. He than wrote on paper "Buyer says 22000 all in, will buy today" and made me sign it, which I did.

He came back and said $21,000 + tax. I said no 22, he than proceeds to "speak with his manager"

Said meet half way at $23,000? And I again said nope 22 all in, than this time he goes and asks me for my visa to put a $500 deposit on it if it works out to buy it today, So I played his game of poker and gave him my visa.

Comes back and says $22,500 and I again told him nope. And started to walk away, He asked for my number and gave me his card and said " heres my card, maybe you can think about it and call me back, or I might call you in a couple of days. by the way, I didnt touch your visa"

Do you think they will call me back? or is that their way of saying gfto politely?

When they say all in did they mention freight and PDI? Say no to the premium headlight fluid!

Did I play that right? Think I could have done better with bargaining? Or ask for more off?

My 22,000 turned into 22,500 to them, what if I said 21,000. Would they have went ahead to say 21,500?

Anytime where you stick to the original budget / number that you came in with, it was a smart move. There is a certain value that the car has to you, and in this case, it appears to be $22k. I would give him a day or two to dwell and then follow up. I would say that you're ready to move on another car unless he can make it work. Add that you felt you had a good report with him and would like to close out the deal.

It does seem like you're not very far apart, but I am much more skeptical of the numbers being thrown back to you. I would be very careful giving your credit card before getting an out the door price, broken down including admin, cert, bs etc in writing.

Reading your post made it sound as though the only paperwork present was your signed statement.

This is basically all you need to know. If you buy it for the price that the vehicle is worth to you than you succeeded. Make sure the price you agree is out the door price with taxes and everything. They aren't called stealerships for nothing.

Good luck

Hmm I handed him my visa knowing that it didnt have anything in it LOL it was my $500 visa for online purchases and I think maybe less than 200$ was in it.

Also, is that good or bad that there was no paperwork besides my signed statement?

They weren't going to check how much is on it, just your credit card score. Missed payments and all that jazz. I'd go back there and tell them now I want $21,000 all in or $22,000 and an apology.
Bring some Yamalube and watch him bend over :D

A lack of paperwork would be a bad thing in this case. Your goal should be to get a piece of paper with every cost included and detailed for an all-in price of $22,000. Don't sign anything less.

Many dealers will alter trade in values, add superfluous charges (window security etching, mandatory warranties etc) at the very last possible moment. The logic behind this would be that they buyer has already emotionally committed to the purchase and the item and is unlikely to walk over a few hundred dollars.

You live in the single most populated region in the country and you're not shopping for vintage Ferraris. If this passes another will come along.

Hmm good point, I am not in a huge rush to get a car as of yet, Just going in with that mentality saved me from 22,500 Lol.

I mean I do want a new-ish car but Im not in a rush or Im not so much in love with this car to break my bank for it.

you played it right, they need a visa or signed form so they have a chance that you aren't just out amusing yourself and they may be able to put a sale together. If they can get you to where everybody is good, and often $500 + or - is not a deal breaker, but good for you going in with a limit and sticking to it. They need to move inventory, but they need to pay the mortgage and keep the lights on to. Wait a day or so and I bet you get a call back, it may not be yet the price you want, but they have an interested party to talk to.

They will likely contact you with something in the price range you are looking at with less features or trim level or even a completely different model depending on what you were looking at. Good luck.
