Can you low ball a dealership?

I have never bought any new or used vehicles from a dealership before, but as of late I am considering on a CPO.

With private sales a lot of ppl leave room to negotiate prices, are dealerships the same way? or is their listed price firm?

What would be a reasonable amount (if there is such a thing) to low ball.. sort of speak Lol. Would they tell me where to go if I tried to offer like $2000 off their listed price?

Just I dunno, I have found this certain car for cheaper on private sales by far, but I wasnt a fan of the colors, and I happen to found the one that fits my taste but its a CPO from a dealership. Comparable KM, options, and condition as many from private.

Do I just walk away and keep looking? or try my luck at the dealership?

Cool, I think I will try that tomorrow ahah. Iv never dealt with dealerships before but I guess its worth a shot.

All I can so is do your research. Big time. There's TONS of information out there. I always thought cash was king for example, but not any more. So just start reading and seriously walk out....... a couple of times, lol.

If the offer is ridiculous they may smile and say thanks for coming out, but they are usually prepared for some bartering. Just don't get caught in the emotional investment of a new car, that's when your heart overrides your wallet.

A dealer has a different mind set than a private seller. The private seller is just getting rid of something he no longer has a use for. The dealer sells and replaces sells, sells and replaces. The dealer bought the item to make a profit and can't realistically sell below cost.

Offering just a bit above dealer cost indicates you know the market. Offering crazy low make you look like an airhead.

There are exceptions to the dealer when he has to show cash flow and will do really strange things with pricing. Typically this is an end of month tally up for the bank.

Just call the dealer and ask if there is any room to move on the price. If they get all stinky and say absolutely not then you have an answer. I'm not saying to negotiate over the phone, just see if the door is open.

What are you trying to accomplish? Do you have the time to go and make offers and get shot down? Or are you seriously looking to purchase something?

There is always room to move in price but then what is the value you put on the experience and support and service?

There is always room for negotiation.......

my last used car purchase was a good one I believe, I offered 25 percent less than what the dealership asking price was, they countered my offer and took off 500 bucks, after some back and forth negotiations, I purchased the car for 13 percent less than the asking price, oil change included (Serivce A) winter mats as well, overall a good buy in my opinion.....

do your research and show up ready to buy if you get your $$. I did this with my last car, and it worked, I did end up spending a good hour there because of the typical back and forth. Basically showing you are serious and if you don't get the price you want then you will walk. This is the only power we the buyer have over the dealer, the ability to walk away. When they see a 100% sale for a small profit walking away they may just call you the next day to come in.

Profit is profit, regardless of how you look at it.

buddy of mine was a car salesman at toyota, and he said there's only $500 - $1000 wiggle room, depending on the model. The salesman could sell for less if they gave up some of their commission, but that's only if they need to meet monthly quotas. Other car manufactures would have different "wiggle rooms" and it always depends on the car.

Your best chance is on a car that's been on the lot for over 90 days. Dealerships need to move product, or they can't take new cars.
Selling one car nobody wants at a loss in order to make room for a car that yields a bigger profit makes sense. The bigger profit would offset the loss.

your buddy is full of BS.....sorry to say, but there is more wiggle room than that.....I negotiated over 2 grand off my sons Genesis when he was purchasing his new vehicle...

So would it be ridiculous if their listed price is $21,995 and what Im trying to do is to get it all under the 20k range after taxes?

Basically I dont want to spend more than 20k on this car. Would you guys say that is too much wiggle room?

You might have a hard time on that one, trying to get it all in for 20G's.
That means, theyd have to sell the car to you at roughly 17000

Yah I was thinking the same Lol. Probly better off waiting for a private listing to come by on this certain car for cheaper.

2 grand you might knock down, 5 might be a bit harder, it depends now if the dealership wants to move the car, or let it sit....check online what is the lowest on the car and start your negotiations......no harm in trying.....

Well I guess I should bump up my budget a bit to get this car, according to bluebook price this car is worth 19,350 from a dealership or 17,500 from private party.

I have found a couple from private and with low km and good shape, wasnt big fan of silver tho.
